Marine municipal fisheries volume of production declined by 24.67 percent

Marine municipal fisheries volume of production in Ilocos Region was estimated at 3,185.32 metric tons in third quarter 2023, lower by 24.67 percent from the 4,228.37 metric tons produced in third quarter 2022. The subsector’s output comprised 9.76 percent of the total volume of fisheries production of the region at 32,627.25 metric tons.

The Ilocos Region contributed 1.54 percent to the 206,639.00 metric tons of marine fisheries production in the country in third quarter 2023.

All the provinces posted decreases in the marine municipal fisheries production

Ilocos Norte, with 647.40 metric tons output, has the highest decrement in marine municipal fisheries production with 39.98 percent or a difference of 431.23 metric tons from the 1,078.63 metric tons production in third quarter 2022. On the other hand, Ilocos Sur has the least decline of 9.86 percent, equivalent to 108.37 metric tons decrease in the volume of production.

Pangasinan had the highest contribution of 32.96 percent in marine fisheries production

By provincial share, Pangasinan contributed 1,049.92 metric tons, equivalent to 32.96 percent of the region’s marine municipal fisheries production. Ilocos Sur followed with a 31.10 percent share, Ilocos Norte with 647.40 metric tons equivalent to 20.33 percent, and La Union with 15.61 percent of the total marine municipal fisheries production in the region.

The top five species captured in marine fisheries in the region were roundscad, yellowfin tuna, squid, skipjack, and big-eyed scad.

Roundscad posted the highest volume of marine municipal fisheries production of 483.54 metric tons in third quarter 2023, which comprised 15.18 percent of the total marine municipal fisheries production.

Yellowfin tuna recorded a production of 319.82 metric tons in third quarter 2023. It comprised 10.04 percent of the marine municipal fisheries production.

Production of squid posted 288.97 metric tons in third quarter 2023. Skipjack and Big-eyed scad, on the other hand, contributed 7.35 percent and 6.52 percent, respectively.
