Region I Population hits 5 Million

The total population of Region I as of August 1, 2015 was 5,025,128, based on the 2015 Census of Population (POPCEN 2015).  This accounted around 5.0 percent of the country’s total population of 100,981,437.  The region’s population in 2015 was higher by 278 thousand compared with the population of 4.75 million in 2010 and by 826 thousand compared with the population of 4.2 million in 2000.

The region’s population increased by 1.09 percent annually, on average, during the period of 2010 to 2015.  By comparison, the rate at which the region’s population grew during the period 2000 to 2010 was higher at 1.23 percent.  On the other hand, the country’s population exhibited an annual population growth rate of 1.72 percent for the period 2010 to 2015 and an annual population growth rate of 1.90 percent for the period 2000 to 2010.

Of the country’s 18 administrative regions, Region I ranked sixth in terms of population size. Region IV-A (CALABARZON) had the biggest population in 2015 with 14.41 million, followed by the National Capital Region (NCR) with 12.88 million, Region III (Central Luzon) with 11.22 million, Region VII (Central Visayas) with 6.04 million and Region V (Bicol) with 5.80 million.  The Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) was the fastest growing region with an average annual population growth rate of 2.89 percent.
Among the four provinces of the region, Pangasinan was the most populous in 2015 with 2.96 million.  Pangasinan ranked fourth among the 81 provinces, with Cavite as the most populous province (3.68 million), followed by Bulacan (3.29 million) and Laguna (3.04 million).  Ilocos Norte remained the smallest in the region in terms of population count with 593 thousand, followed by Ilocos Sur (690 thousand) and La Union (787 thousand).

Among the cities and municipalities of the region, the most populous was San Carlos City (188,571), followed by Dagupan City (171,271), City of Urdaneta (132,940), and Malasiqui (130,275), all from the province of Pangasinan.  The least populous municipality was Carasi with 1,567, followed by Adams with 1,792 both, from the province of Ilocos Norte.
