Housing Characteristics Ilocos Region, 2020

Ilocos Region ‘s housing units reached 1.4 million in 2020
1.    Based on the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (2020 CPH), the Ilocos Region listed 1,366,643 housing units. Of the figure, 90.11 percent or 1,231,448 housing units were occupied as of 01 May 2020.

2.    Between 2020 and 2015, the number of occupied housing units increased by 120,461 or 10.84 percent.

Ilocos Region exceeded the national ratio of 105 households per 100 occupied housing units

3.    A total of 1,306,220 households were recorded in the Ilocos Region in 2020 implying that there were 106 households in every 100 occupied housing units, exceeding the national ratio of 105 households in every 100 occupied housing units.

4.    Similarly, a total of 5,292,238 household population were recorded in the region. This translates to at least four persons living in a housing unit.

Single House was the preferred housing unit in Ilocos Region

5.    Most of the occupied housing units in the Ilocos Region were single houses. The single housing unit type covered 96.01 percent or 1,182,346 units. This was followed by duplexes at 29,276 (2.38 percent), apartment/accessoria/rowhouse at 10,531 (0.86 percent), and other multi-unit residential at 8,033 (0.65 percent). Meanwhile, other unit types registered 1,262 units which covered 0.10 percent.

6.    In terms of the ratio between household population to occupied housing unit, single house and duplex has 4.31 and 4.08, respectively. Unit types such as commercial/industrial/agricultural, institutional living quarters, and apartment/accessoria/rowhouse have at least 3 persons living per unit. Meanwhile, other types of housing units have at least 2 persons living per unit.

Three-fourths of the housing unit in the region have concrete construction materials

7.    In 2020, seven in ten (75.53 percent) of the occupied housing units in the Ilocos Region had concrete outer walls. This was followed by half concrete/brick/ stone and half wood at 8.66 percent. Meanwhile, bamboo/sawali/cogon/nipa, wood, and galvanized iron/aluminum covered 7.18, 5.58 and 1.55 percent, respectively. Other materials used for outer walls were at 1.50 percent.

8.    Most of the materials used for the roof were galvanized iron (89.62 percent) followed by half galvanized iron and half concrete (3.91 percent), and concrete/clay tile (2.80 percent). On the other hand, wood or bamboo tile, and cogon/nipa/anahaw tile with 1.67 percent, and 1.29 percent, respectively. The remaining 0.72 percent composed other construction materials of the roof.

9.    Similar to the material used for outer walls, concrete was the topped material used for the floor of a housing unit in the Ilocos Region. It covered 87.30 percent of the total housing unit. Earth/sand/mud followed at 6.93 percent, and wood at 3.70 percent. Other construction materials used for the floor shared 2.07 percent of the total housing unit in the region.

10.    Meanwhile, almost half of the housing units’ finishing materials for the floor were cement/brick/stone. Ceramic tile/marble/granite was the second most commonly used finishing material of the floor at 36.78 percent. Other finishing materials composed of 10.60 percent. On the other hand, 4.05 percent of the occupied housing units do not have finishing materials of their floor.
Nine out of ten occupied units have one-storey building

11.    About 1.1 million (86.52 percent) occupied housing units were one-storey buildings. This was followed by two-storey buildings with 158,913 units and three-storey buildings with 5,910 units. Buildings with more than three-storey were reported at 725 units.
 

Most of the housing units in Ilocos Region were constructed earlier than 2000

12.    Of the 1.23 million housing units in Ilocos Region, 357,235 were constructed between 2011 to 2020. Units constructed from 2001 to 2010 were recorded at 256,378. Buildings built during the period 1991 to 2000 was posted at 213,323. Meanwhile, units constructed earlier than the year 2000 were at 307,082.

13.    The majority or 1.03 million housing units in Ilocos Region do not need repair or minor repair. Meanwhile, 133,669 housing units need major repair. The remaining occupied housing units were categorized as unfinished construction, under construction, under renovation, and dilapidated or condemned.

One in every two occupied housing had a floor area of less than 50 square meters

14.    About 57.95 percent of the total occupied housing units in Ilocos Region had floor area of less than 50 square meters. On the other hand, 516,823 (41.97 percent) were 50 square meters and above. The rests were either not reported or not applicable cases.

15.    Out of the 1,306,220 households, 934,700 or 71.56 percent owned or had owner-like possession of the house and let them occupied. Meanwhile, 208,378 or 15.95 percent owned a house rent-free with the consent of the owner. Moreover, there were 81,703 households or 6.26 percent who occupied rent-free houses and lots with the consent of the owner.
