La Union’s commercial fisheries production decreases in 2023

The volume of production from commercial fisheries was posted at 673.40 metric tons in 2023. This recorded a decrease of 0.64 percent from its level in the same period a year ago of 677.73 metric tons.

The top five major catch in La Union in 2023 were Threadfin Bream (Bisugo) with 79.93 metric tons, Goatfish (Saramulyete) with 60.09 metric tons, Slipmouth (Sapsap) with 56.78 metric tons, Hairtail (Espada) with 48.62 metric tons, and Big-eyed Scad (Matangbaka) with 28.55 metric tons.

Threadfin Bream output contributed 11.87 percent to the total commercial fisheries production in 2023. Meanwhile, the shares of Goatfish, Slipmouth, Hairtail and Big-eyed Scad production to the total commercial fisheries output in 2023 were 8.92 percent, 8.43 percent, 7.22 percent, and 4.24 percent, respectively.

The total value of commercial fisheries production in La Union in 2023 was PhP102,013.15 which was 8.22 percent higher than its value a year ago of PhP94,263.10.

The top three species with the highest contribution to the total value of commercial fisheries production in 2023 included Threadfin Bream with PhP9,969.04 (9.77 percent share), Goatfish with PhP7,560.29 (7.41 percent share), and Slipmouth with PhP7,025.57 (6.89 percent share). Value of production for Threadfin Bream, Goatfish, and Slipmouth went up by 7.97 percent, 12.71 percent, and 23.74 percent, respectively from their respective value of production last year.

Data for commercial fisheries were obtained from Local Government Unit (LGU) -managed fish landing centers, privately-managed fish landing centers, and traditional fish landing centers.

TECHNICAL NOTES

Landing Center is a place where the fish catch and other aquatic products are unloaded and traded. Traditional landing center is a type of landing center where fishermen could unload their catch and/or dock their fishing boats without any obligation or payment for the use of the place.

Quarterly Commercial Fisheries Survey (Traditional Landing Center) is a quarterly survey on the volume of fish unloading in traditional landing centers and the price of fish by species. It gathers data on a quarterly basis but the information that is collected is about monthly fish unloading.

Quarterly Commercial Fisheries Survey (Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA), Local Government Units (LGUs), Privately-Managed Landing Centers) is the gathering of data from the records of the PFDA, LGU and privately-managed landing centers. It is done on a quarterly basis but the information being collected is on each of the three months included in the reference quarter.
