The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) – La Union Provincial Statistical Office carried out the 3rd Quarter 2024 Fisheries Survey in the province on 09 to 20 September 2024. This survey includes the Quarterly Aquaculture Survey (QAqS) and Quarterly Inland Municipal Survey (QIFS).
The surveys aim to gather data on the volume and value of production in aquaculture and inland fisheries, categorized by aquafarm type and species. The statistics that will be generated from these surveys will be used for compiling national accounts, assessing agricultural performance, policy making and program implementation, as well as supporting research and studies.
For this purpose, the PSA-La Union hired and trained six (6) Statistical Researchers (SRs) who visited 238 sample aquafarm operators, along with two (2) SRs assigned in 85 inland fishing households. These activities were conducted in coordination with the Local Government Units (LGUs).
All information obtained from the respondents will be treated with utmost confidentiality. According to Section 26 of Republic Act (RA) No. 10625, “Individual data furnished by a respondent to statistical inquiries, surveys, and censuses conducted by the PSA shall be considered privilege communication and shall be inadmissible as evidence in any proceeding.”
Meanwhile, the key results of the 2nd Quarter 2024 Fisheries Surveys in La Union are the following:
La Union ranked second among the provinces of Ilocos Region in terms of fisheries volume of production in 2nd quarter 2024. It contributed 7.56 percent to the total volume of fish production in the region.
The total volume of fisheries production in 2nd quarter 2024 was estimated at 3,547.15 metric tons which was 32.11 percent lower than 5,224.65 metric tons estimate in 2nd quarter of 2023.
Among the fisheries subsectors, aquaculture posted the largest contribution (85.21%) to the fisheries output in the province in 2nd quarter 2024. Aquaculture production was estimated at 3,022.45 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2024 lower by 32.24 percent than its output of 4,596.27 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2023.
Municipal fisheries ranked second with 468.59 metric tons contributing 13.21 percent to the total fisheries production of the province. The 2nd quarter 2024 production showed a decrease of 1.12 percent from the 473.92 metric tons production in 2nd quarter 2023.
Commercial fisheries had the smallest (1.58%) contribution to the fisheries volume of production in the province at 56.10 metric tons. It showed a decrease of 63.68 percent from the 154.45 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2023.
The total value of all fisheries production in La Union in 2nd quarter 2024 was recorded at PhP754,870.53 which was 22 percent lower than its value in the same quarter of last year at PhP1,457,875.03.
