Based on the results of the 2020 Census of Population and Housing, Ilocos Region had a household population of 5,292,297, comprising 99.8 percent of the total population of the region. Of this total, 2.68 million (50.7 percent) were male, and 2.61 million (49.3 percent) were female.

 

Sex ratio stands at 103 males per 100 females

 

The sex ratio in the region in 2020 posted at 103. It implies that there were 103 males for every 100 females. Children below 15 years old had a sex ratio of 108 males per 100 females. Those 15 to 64 years old had a sex ratio of 105 males per 100 females. Among those 65 years old and over, the sex ratio was 69 males per 100 females. This leads to the conclusion that women live longer than men in the region.

Economically active population dominates the Ilocos Region

There were 1.49 million (28.2 percent) young dependents, 14 years old and below. Those at the working age or economically active population, 15 to 64 years old, totaled to 3.41 million (64.5 percent), while the remaining 388 thousand (7.3 percent), 65 years old and above, comprised the old dependents.

More males than females in children under five years old

Children below five years old registered a total of 480 thousand, or 9.07 percent of the overall household population in the Ilocos Region in 2020. This is lower than the 502 thousand record in 2015. The sex ratio remained at 108 males per 100 females in 2015 and 2020.

School-age population in 2020 is higher than the record in 2015

The school-age population, 5 to 24 years old, accounted for 37.37 percent of the total household population in the region. This is 2.68 percent higher than the household population for the said age group in 2015 of 1.93 million. There were more males (1.02 million) than females (953 thousand) in the school-age population.

Senior citizens comprise 10.91 percent of the household population

In the Philippines, people aged 60 years old and over are regarded as senior citizens. In the Ilocos Region, 578 thousand or 10.9 percent of the total household population in 2020 were senior citizens. This figure is higher than the 493 thousand in 2015. There were more females (326 thousand) than males (251 thousand) among the senior citizens in 2020. The same trend was observed in 2015.

More than half of the female population are of reproductive age

Women of reproductive age, 15 to 49 years old, totaled to 1.33 million or 50.74 percent of the 2.61 million female household population in 2020. This is lower than the 48.0 percent record in 2015.
