PRODUCTION
The total hog production in Ilocos Region remarkably narrowed down its output posting a 20.08 percent loss in 2022. The commodity’s production was posted at 24,020.61 metric tons, liveweight lower by 6,035.68 metric tons, liveweight from its output in 2021 of 30,056.29 metric tons, liveweight. Both 1st and 2nd quarter 2022 production recorded decreases of 18.20 percent and 22.02 respectively.
Ilocos Region contributed 2.88 percent (Fig. 2) to the national 1st semester 2022 production of 835,125.05 metric tons liveweight, ranking 11th among the hog producing regions in the country.
INVENTORY
The swine inventory in Ilocos Region as of January 1, 2022 was estimated at 259,712 heads, declined by 29.08 percent from previous year’s inventory of 366,229 heads. Moreover, swine inventory as of April 1, 2022 of 255,435 heads decreased by 23.33 percent over last year’s level of same reference period.
The reduction in the swine population in Ilocos Region as of January 1, 2022 was contributed by Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and Pangasinan with decreases of headcounts by 36.56 percent, 40.36 percent and 22.02 percent respectively. The inventory in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur as of April 1, 2022 further contracted by 50.56 percent and 33.19 percent respectively. On the otherhand, swine headcounts in La Union and Pangasinan as of April 1, 2022 registered increases of 18.91 percent and 57.79 percent respectively as compared to 2021 inventory of same reference period.
PRICES
The average farmgate price of hogs upgraded for slaughter in backyard farms for January to June 2022 went up by 13.30 percent, from PhP 178.73 per kilogram, liveweight in the same period a year ago to PhP 202.51 per kilogram, liveweight this period.
The highest farmgate price was recorded in the month of January 2022 at PhP 214.29 per kilogram, liveweight. The lowest farm price was felt in April 2022 at PhP 187.86 per kilogram, liveweight. Said farmgate price was 1.11 percent lower than the price of April 2021 at Php189.96 per kilogram, liveweight.
