EGGPLANT

Production of eggplant in Ilocos Region was recorded at 97,759.14 metric tons in 2021. This was 2.43 percent higher than the 95,443.66 metric tons output in 2020 (Table 1).           

Ilocos Region was the leading producer of eggplant in the country with a share of 40.06 percent to the national production of 244,034.56 metric tons in 2021.

By provincial breakdown, bulk of the output in 2021 was contributed by Pangasinan with a share of 81.97 percent, followed by Ilocos Norte with 8.42 percent share, Ilocos Sur with 7.04 percent share, and La Union with 2.57 percent share.  All provinces in the region posted increases in production in 2021 compared to output in 2020 (Figure 2).

TOMATO

In 2021, tomato production of 75,127.03 metric tons in Ilocos Region was 2.30 percent higher than the  73,435.34 metric tons output in 2020. (Table 1).

Ilocos Region topped all the tomato producing regions, contributing 33.32 percent to the national output of 225,450.60 metric tons. (Figure 3)

Out of the total production of the Ilocos Region, the provinces of Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur contributed 35.82 percent and 35.21 percent respectively while Pangasinan and La Union had shares of 25.82 percent and 3.15 percent, respectively.

Production increases were noted in Ilocos Sur and Pangasinan by 6.47 percent and 3.39 percent, respectively compared to output in 2020 (Fig 4 and Table 1). Meanwhile, tomato production in Ilocos Norte and La Union posted decreases of 1.99 percent and 0.17 percent, respectively.

ONIONS (Mature Bulb)

The production of Ilocos Region on Onion, Mature bulb in 2021 was estimated at 38,968.45 metric tons. It dropped by 3.89 percent compared to the 2020 output of 40,543.79 metric tons (Table 1).

Out of the ten onion producing regions, Ilocos Region ranked 3rd with a share of 17.87 percent of country’s total output of 218,047.33 metric tons (Figure 5).

Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur, the foremost producers of onion in the region, have almost equal share to the region’s total production of about 47.81 percent and 47.08 percent, respectively while Pangasinan and La Union had shares of 4.27 percent and 0.83 percent, respectively. Positive growth in production was noted only in Ilocos Norte in 2021 (Figure 6).

CASSAVA

Cassava production in Ilocos Region was estimated at 18,827.79 metric tons in 2021.  This posted a meager production decrease of 0.74 percent compared to the 2020 output of 18,968.65 metric tons (Table 1).  Ilocos Region contributed 0.74 percent to the total national output of 2,559,811.9 metric tons.

More than half or 59.33 percent of the 2021 cassava production in Ilocos Region was contributed by Pangasinan.  Ilocos Norte, La Union and Ilocos Sur had shares of 18.23 percent,14.86 percent and 7.58 respectively (Table 1).  Decline in production were noted in Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan by 2.11 percent, 2.54 percent, and 1.36 percent respectively while cassava output in Ilocos Norte grew by 3.53 percent.

SQUASH FRUIT

In 2021, squash production in Ilocos Region was recorded at 16,819.34 metric tons, about 2.87 percent lower than the 2020 output of 17,316.71 metric tons (Table 1).  Ilocos Region ranked sixth among the squash fruit producing regions with a share of 8.62 percent to the country’s production of 195,083.63 metric tons.

Out of the total production of the Ilocos Region, the provinces of Pangasinan and Ilocos Norte contributed 36.25 percent and 35.06 percent, respectively while Ilocos Sur and La Union had shares of 16.15 percent and 12.53 percent, respectively.  Production drop were noted in Pangasinan, Ilocos Norte and La Union by 8.80 percent, 3.53 percent and 0.30 percent, respectively.

SWEET POTATO/CAMOTE

The production of Ilocos Region on Sweet Potato, also known as “Camote”, in 2021 was estimated at 15,512.72 metric tons. It slightly dropped by 0.51 percent compared to the 2020 output of 15,592.86 metric tons (Table 1).  Ilocos Region contributed 2.84 percent to the total national output of  545,519.40 metric tons (Figure 11).

By provincial breakdown, more than three fourth or 77.47 percent of the total region’s production was contributed by Pangasinan and La Union. The remaining 22.53 percent were contributed by Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur. Production decreases on camote in 2021 were noted in Ilocos Norte, La Union and Pangasinan.

MUNGBEAN/MONGO

The mungbean or mongo production of Ilocos Region in 2021 was estimated at 12,573.01metric tons. It dropped by 3.46 percent compared to the 2020 output of 13,023.47 metric tons (Table 1). Ilocos Region was the leading producer of mongo among the sixteen (16) regions, contributing 35.43 percent of the total national output of 35,482.23 metric tons.

Pangasinan and Ilocos Norte with aggregate share of 89.68 percent to the total region’s output registered production decreases of 6.34 and 2.91 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, Ilocos Sur and La Union that shared the remaining 10.32 percent of the region’s production registered output increases of 10.67 percent and 1.95 percent, respectively.

STRINGBEANS

In 2021, stringbeans production in Ilocos Region was recorded at 12,543.09 metric tons, about 1.71 percent lower than the 2020 output of 12,761.14 metric tons (Table 1).  Ilocos Region ranked 3rd among the stringbean producing regions with a share of 11.53 percent to the country’s production of 108,781.43 metric tons.

Bulk of the region’s output was contributed by Pangasinan with share of 37.16 percent, followed by Ilocos Norte with 23.56 percent share, Ilocos Sur with 20.78 percent share, and La Union with18.50 percent share.
All provinces posted production decreases in 2021.

AMPALAYA FRUIT

Ampalaya fruit production in Ilocos Region was estimated at 10,400.11 metric tons in 2021. This registered a 1.15 percent drop in production compared to the 2020 output of 10,521.17 metric tons (Table 1).  Ilocos Region contributed 11.79 percent to the total national output of  88,215.45 metric tons.

The biggest contribution to the region’s ampalaya fruit production 2021 was the province of Ilocos Norte with share of 32.78 percent. This was followed by Pangasinan with share of 24.85 percent. Ilocos Sur with 22.41 percent and La Union with 19.95 percent. Ilocos Norte, La Union and Pangasinan posted decreases in production by 3.06 percent, 1.12 percent and 0.10 percent respectively (Table 1).

GARLIC

The garlic production of Ilocos Region in 2021 was estimated at 4,571.08 metric tons. This posted a 1.18 percent drop in production compared to the 2020 output of 4,625.73 metric tons (Table 1).  Ilocos Region, the top producer of garlic among seven producing regions, contributed 77.61 percent to the total country’s output of 5,890.14 metric tons in 2021.

Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur are the garlic producers in Ilocos Region with shares of 96.85 percent and 3.15 percent, respectively. Both provinces posted ouput decreases in 2021 compared 2020 garlic production.
