La Union’s commercial fisheries production decreases in 2nd Quarter 2022
The volume of production from commercial fisheries was posted at 99.14 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2022. This recorded a decrease of 63.19 percent from its level in the same period a year ago of 269.36 metric tons.
The top five major catch in La Union in 2nd quarter 2022 were Slipmouth (Sapsap) with 7.39 metric tons, Hairtail (Espada) with 6.24 metric tons, Indian Mackerel (Alumahan) with 6.05 metric tons, Goatfish (Saramulyete) with 5.75 metric tons, and Threadfin Bream (Bisugo) with 5.65 metric tons.
Slipmouth output contributed 7.45 percent to the total commercial fisheries production in 2nd quarter of 2022. Meanwhile, the shares of Hairtail, Indian Mackerel, Goatfish and Threadfin Bream production to the total commercial fisheries output in the said quarter were 6.29 percent, 6.10 percent, 5.80 percent, and 5.70 percent, respectively.
The total value of commercial fisheries production in La Union in 2nd quarter 2022 was PhP10, 900.21 which was 67.27 percent lower than its value in the same quarter of the previous year of PhP33, 307.11.
The top three species with the highest contribution to the total value of commercial fisheries production in 2nd quarter 2022 include Slipmouth with PhP1,462.48 (13.42 percent share), Threadfin Bream with PhP1,094.29 (10.04 percent share), and Goatfish with PhP748.54 (6.87 percent share). Value of production for Slipmouth, Threadfin Bream, and Goatfish went down by 66.63 percent, 75.36 percent, and 56.12 percent, respectively from their respective value of production in the same quarter last year.
Data for commercial fisheries were obtained from Local Government Unit (LGU) -managed fish landing centers, privately-managed fish landing centers, and traditional fish landing centers.
TECHNICAL NOTES
Landing Center is a place where the fish catch and other aquatic products are unloaded and traded. Traditional landing center is a type of landing center where fishermen could unload their catch and/or dock their fishing boats without any obligation or payment for the use of the place.
Quarterly Commercial Fisheries Survey (Traditional Landing Center) is a quarterly survey on the volume of fish unloading in traditional landing centers and the price of fish by species. It gathers data on a quarterly basis but the information that is collected is about monthly fish unloading.
Quarterly Commercial Fisheries Survey (Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA), Local Government Units (LGUs), Privately-Managed Landing Centers) is the gathering of data from the records of the PFDA, LGU and privately-managed landing centers. It is done on a quarterly basis but the information being collected is on each of the three months included in the reference quarter.
