A total of 3,378 deaths in Ilocos Region were registered in December 2021. The figure indicated a 7.0 percent increase compared to 3,156 deaths registered in the same period in 2020.

The province of Pangasinan ranked first in terms of the number of registered deaths in December 2021, with a total of 1,891 or 56.0 percent share to the total registered deaths in the region. La Union ranked second with 545 registered deaths (16.1 percent), Ilocos Sur with 496 registered deaths (14.7 percent), and Ilocos Norte with 446 registered deaths (13.2 percent).

Comparing the two periods, Ilocos Sur reported the highest percentage increase at 18.7 percent, followed by Ilocos Norte with 15.8 percent. Meanwhile, La Union and Pangasinan recorded increases in registered deaths of 9.2 percent and 2.0 percent, respectively.

Among the top ten cities/ municipalities, Dagupan City and San Carlos City, Pangasinan posted the highest number of registered deaths in December 2021 with 255 and 223, respectively. These were followed by the City of San Fernando, La Union (192), City of Batac, Ilocos Norte (128) and City of Urdaneta, Pangasinan (119). On the other hand, Lingayen had the least number with 66 registered deaths.

Meanwhile, the cities/municipalities of Burgos (Ilocos Norte), Dumalneg, San Esteban, Nueva Era, San Emilio, Santa Catalina, Burgos (La Union), Alilem, Gregorio del Pilar, Nagbukel, San Idelfonso, Sigay, Lidlidda, Galimuyod, Quirino, Sugpon, Santol and Burgos (Pangasinan) had the least number which ranges from one to five registered deaths.

In Table 2, there were more death occurrences among males (1,883) than females (1,495) in Ilocos Region in December 2021. The computed sex ratio during this period was 126 male deaths every 100 female deaths.

The province of Ilocos Norte posted the highest computed sex ratio with 146, followed by Ilocos Sur with 125 and Pangasinan with 124. The province of La Union posted the lowest computed sex ratio with 117 male deaths for every 100 female deaths.

Figure 2 shows that majority of deaths in the Ilocos Region occurred at their home with a total of 1,997 registered deaths in December 2021. This was 3.3 percent lower compared to same period last year of 2,065 registered deaths.

On the other hand, deaths that occurred in the Hospital registered at 1,381 deaths in December 2021. This exhibited a 26.6 percent increase compared to December 2020 with 1,091 registered deaths.

From the 3,378 total registered deaths in December 2021, there were 1,531 deaths (45.3 percent) that are Medically attended by medical authorities, while 1,847 deaths (54.7 percent) were not medically attended. 

Table 3 shows that Burial was the preferred method of corpse disposal in the Ilocos Region with a total of 3,247 corpses buried in December 2021. This was followed distantly by Cremation with 106 corpses, Other methods with 14 corpses, and Not stated with 11 corpses.

The province of Pangasinan posted the highest number of corpses disposed through the method of burial with 1,838 corpses. La Union and Ilocos Sur followed with 489 and 484 corpses, respectively. Ilocos Norte registered the lowest with 436 corpses buried.

Meanwhile, the province of La Union registered the highest number of corpses disposed of through Cremation with a total of 44 corpses. The province also posted the highest number of corpse disposal through other methods.

In Figure 4, from the total number of deceased people (3,378) in Ilocos Region in December 2021, 95.7 percent (3,234) were timely registered. While 4.3 percent (144) were late registered.
