A total of 2,403 deaths were registered in La Union in 4th quarter of 2021.  The figure indicated an increase of 75.66 percent death occurrences from the same period in 2020 with 1,368. (Table 1)

 

 

The City of San Fernando ranked first in terms of the number of registered deaths in 4th quarter of 2021 with 808 or 33.62 percent of the total registered deaths in the province.  Agoo ranked second with 259 registered deaths (10.78 percent share), followed by Bauang with 142 (5.91 percent share), Bacnotan with 126 (5.24 percent share) and Naguilian with 123 (5.12percent share). 

 

The same quarter in 2020, City of San Fernando also recorded the highest number of registered deaths with 496 deaths or 36.26 percent of the provincial total. This was followed by Agoo with 133 registered deaths (9.72 percent share), Bauang with 77 (5.63 percent share), Naguilian with 74 (4.83 percent share) and Bacnotan with 59 (4.31 percent share).

 

 

The municipalities of Burgos, Santol and Pugo posted the smallest number of registered deaths in 4th quarter of 2021 with 15 deaths (0.62 percent share), 23 deaths (1.02 percent share) and 27 deaths (1.17 percent share), respectively. Similarly, in 2020, the municipalities of Burgos, Santol and Bagulin had the least number of registered deaths with 5 deaths (0.37 percent share), 14 deaths (1.02 percent share) and 15 deaths (1.10 percent share), respectively.  There were more death occurrences among males at 1,310 (54.52 percent share) than females at 1,093 (45.48 percent share) in La Union in 4th quarter of 2021.  The computed sex ratio during the year was 120 which means that there are 120 male deaths for every 100 female deaths. 

 

 

A total of 11 city/municipalities posted a sex ratio higher than the provincial sex ratio, the highest of which was recorded in San Gabriel with 161. San San Juan ranked second with 152 followed by Santo Tomas with 150. (Table 2)

 

 

The daily average death occurrences in 4th quarter of 2021 was computed at 23 or an average of one death per hour.  In the same quarter in 2020, the daily average deaths were recorded at 15 death occurrences per day. (Table 3)

 

 

The month of October recorded the highest number of registered deaths in 4th quarter of 2021 with 1,161 occurrences. The number of deaths translates to an average of 37 death occurrences per day. In the same period in 2020, the number of registered deaths peaked in December with 499 deaths or an average of 16 deaths per day.

 

Meanwhile, the months of December posted the lowest number of registered deaths in 4th quarter of 2021 with 545 death occurrences or an average of 18 death occurrences per day. (Figure 3)

Data on deaths presented in this release were obtained from the Certificate of Death (Municipal Form 103) registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars in La Union and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority - La Union Provincial Statistical Office. Information included deaths registered from January to December of 2020 and 2021.
