The number of registered marriages in La Union increased by 26.58 percent from 2,111 in 2020 to 2,672 in 2021.
Almost all city/municipalities have increased number of registered marriages in 2021 compared with their 2020 figures. The top three municipalities that posted the highest increase were Aringay from 100 to 226 (126.00%), Pugo from 41 to 78
(90.24%) and Balaoan from 71 to 115 (61.97%). (Table 1)
The City of San Fernando recorded the greatest number of registered marriages in
La Union in 2021 with 421 marriages or 15.76 percent of the total registered marriages in the province. Bauang ranked second with 253 marriages (9.47 percent share) followed by Aringay with 226 marriages (8.46 percent share).
In 2020, the City of San Fernando also topped among the city/municipalities with 329 marriages or 15.59 percent of the total registered marriages in the province. Bauang ranked second with 200 marriages (9.47 percent share) followed by Rosario with 180 marriages (8.53 percent share).
On the other end, the municipality of Burgos posted the least number of registered marriages both in 2020 and 2021 with 22 (1.04 percent share) and 27 (1.01 percent share), respectively. (Figure 1)
The month of December had the greatest number of registered marriages in 2021 with a total of 415 marriages. It corresponds to a daily average of 13 which surpassed the provincial daily average number of 7 registered marriages in 2021. While the months of May and January ranked second and third with 383 registered marriages and 292 registered marriages, respectively.
In 2021, the least number of registered marriages was posted in the month of August with 90 registered marriages or a daily average of 3. (Table 2)
In 2020, the month of January recorded the highest number of registered marriages with 683 or a daily average of 22 marriages. The month of February followed with 356 marriages corresponding to a daily average of 12 marriages. Third in rank is the month of December with 273 registered marriages or a daily average of 9. On the other end, the month of April recorded the least number of registered marriages with 10. (Figure 2)
The highest nunber of grooms who got married in 2021 belonged to the age group 25 to 29 with 1,020 grooms. Similarly, the highest number of brides also belonged to age group of 25 to 29 with 1,048.
On the contrary, the least number of grooms who got married in 2021 belonged to the below 20 age group with 29 registered marriages. Meanwhile, the least number of brides belonged to the age group 45 to 49 with 27 registered marriages.
In 2021, marriages performed through civil rites ranked first with 1,487 registered marriages (55.65 percent share). Marriage ceremonies solemnized in Roman Catholic churches ranked second with 656 or 24.55 percent of the total marriages in the province. This was distantly followed by other religious rites with 518 marriages (19.39 percent share). Marriage ceremonies conducted by Muslim recorded the least number of 11 ceremonies (0.41 percent share).

Data on marriages presented in this release were obtained from the Certificate of Marriage (Municipal Form No. 97) registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars in La Union and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority - La Union Provincial Statistical Office. Information presented includes marriages registered from January to December of 2019 and 2020.
