Registered deaths in all provinces decreased in 2020

  • Ilocos Region registered a total of 36,919 deaths in 2020.
  • Pangasinan topped the highest number of deaths in 2020.  Its share was more than half (59 percent) of the total registered deaths in the region at 20,674 deaths.  
  • La Union ranked second with 5,634 deaths (16 percent). 
  • Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte followed at 4,573 deaths (13 percent) and 4,323 (12 percent), respectively, in 2020. 
  • In all provinces, the number of deaths decreased from 2019 to 2020.

Males outnumber females in terms of registered deaths in 2020

  • Males (19,567) outnumbered females (15,637) in terms of registered deaths  in 2020, resulting in a sex ratio of 125 males per 100 females.
  • La Union posted a sex ratio of 130 in 2020, higher than the regional ratio.
  • Pangasinan and Ilocos Norte followed with a sex ratio of 125 and 124 in 2020, repectively.  
  • Ilocos Sur posted the lowest sex ratio in the region with 120 in 2020.

 

Deaths in the region were mostly medically attended in 2020

  • There were 17,161 total registered deaths that were attended by medical practitioners.
  • Deaths that were not medically attended reached up to 15,531.

Percentage of deaths attended by health professionals highest in La Union in 2020

  • La Union had the highest percentage of recorded deaths attended by health professionals with 66 percent of the total registered deaths in the province in 2020.
  • In Ilocos Norte, health professionals attended to 50 percent of the total registered deaths in the province in 2020.
  • In Ilocos Sur and Pangasinan, health professionals attended to 47 percent and 44 percent, respectively, of the total registered deaths in the province.   
  • Among provinces, Pangasinan had the most number of deaths assisted by health professionals at 9,154 deaths in 2020.

There were 399 corpses cremated in Ilocos Region in 2020

  • Generally, corpses in the region were disposed through burial.  In 2020, there were 34,382 corpses who were buried.
  • Pangasinan had the most number of corpses buried while Ilocos Norte had the least number of buried corpses at 20,329 and 4,316, respectively, in 2020.
  • Cremation is another option for corpse disposal.  In the region, there were 399 corpses registered in 2020.
  • Pangasinan registered 242 cremated corpses while La Union listed 142 cremated corpses.
