Palay
Palay production in Ilocos Region in 3rd quarter 2020 increased by 1.48 percent. The volume of production was recorded at 189,016 metric tons, higher than the 186,265 metric tons output in 3rd quarter 2019. The overall yield per hectare improved from 4.80 metric tons to 4.90 metric tons. The harvest area, on the other hand, decreased from 38,807 hectares to 38,606 hectares. All the provinces, except Pangasinan, posted increment in output.
The province of Pangasinan is the highest in terms of palay production in the Ilocos Region in 3rd quarter 2020 with 47.70 percent share. The volume of production, however, declined to 90,157 metric tons from 95,857 metric tons output in 3rd quarter 2019. The harvest area went down from 20,475 hectares to 18,979 hectares due to insufficient water supply along the service areas of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA). On the other hand, the yield per hectare grew from 4.68 metric tons to 4.75 hectares due to increased usage of high quality seeds.
The province of Ilocos Norte accounted 26.61 percent to the total palay production in the region in 3rd quarter 2020. Its output of 50,302 metric tons was higher by 4.22 percent compared with the 48,266 metric tons output in 3rd quarter 2019. The harvest area expanded from 9,727 hectares to 9,903 hectares due to early plantings and occurrence of favorable rain, absence of destructive typhoons, and availability of seeds and subsidized and free fertilizers. Shifting from corn was also noted. The yield per hectare, likewise, improved from 4.96 metric tons to 5.08 metric tons.
The province of Ilocos Sur is third highest in terms of palay production in 3rd quarter 2020 with 18.84 percent of the total palay production in Ilocos Region. From the output of 30,885 metric tons in 3rd quarter 2019, it grew to 35,609 metric tons this year due to availability of hybrid and inbred seeds and subsidized and free fertilizers. The absence of destructive typhoons also contributed to the overall growth in production. The harvest area grew from 6,155 metric tons to 6,907 metric tons. The yield per hectare also improved from 5.02 metric tons to 5.16 metric tons.
The province of La Union recorded the least volume of palay production with 6.85 percent of the total palay production in the region in 3rd quarter 2020. Palay output of the province during the period posted positive growth of 15.02 percent. From 11,257 metric tons production in 3rd quarter 2019, it grew to 12,948 metric tons this year. Harvest area increased from 2,450 hectares to 2,817 hectares due early release of irrigation water and shifting from corn production. Yield per hectare increased from 4.59 metric tons to 4.60 metric tons.
Corn
Corn production in Ilocos Region grew by 2.45 percent in 3rd quarter 2020. From the production of 8,983 metric tons in 3rd quarter 2019, it increased to 9,203 metric tons this 3rd quarter 2020. The occurrence of favorable rains and absence of destructive typhoons improved the yield per hectare from 4.21 metric tons to 4.35 metric tons. On the other hand, the overall harvest area decreased from 2,134 hectares to 2,118 hectares. The provinces of Ilocos Sur and Pangasinan recorded positive growth in the volume of corn production.
Ilocos Sur ranked first in terms of volume of production with 49.30 percent share to the total corn production output of Ilocos Region in 3rd quarter 2020. The province’s output reached to 4,537 metric tons from 4,225 metric tons production in 3rd quarter 2019. The harvest area increased from 944 hectares to 1,016 hectares due to more plantings encouraged by high demand and availability of free seeds from the provincial government. The yield per hectare, on the other hand, decreased from 4.48 metric tons to 4.47 metric tons.
Pangasinan shared 27.22 percent to the total corn production in the region in 3rd quarter 2020. Its production grew from 2,471 metric tons in 3rd quarter 2019 to 2,505 metric tons this year. The yield per hectare improved from 4.35 metric tons to 4.66 metric tons due to the increased usage of high quality seeds. On the other hand, the harvest area decreased from 568 hectares to 537 hectares due to frequent rains during the planting schedule.
Ilocos Norte accounted for 15.49 percent of the total corn production in the region in 3rd quarter 2020. Its corn production of 1,426 metric tons was 0.35 percent lower than the production of 1,431 metric tons in 3rd quarter 2019. Some farmers shifted to palay and other crops, and there are expected movement of harvest to 4th quarter 2020 due to delayed plantings. Thus, harvest area went down to 339 hectares from 364 hectares. The yield per hectare, on the other hand, grew from 3.93 metric tons to 4.21 metric tons due to favorable rains, absence of destructive typhoons, and increased usage of high quality seeds.
The province of La Union recorded the least corn production in 3rd quarter 2020 with 7.99 percent of the total corn production in Ilocos Region. Its output went down from 856 metric tons to 735 metric tons. The harvest area went down from 258 hectares to 226 hectares due to shifting to palay production. The yield per hectare, likewise, decreased to 3.25 metric tons from 3.32 metric tons in 3rd quarter 2019.
