PRODUCTION
The region’s aggregate livestock production in 2019 was 142,594 metric tons liveweight. This was 0.19 percent lower than last year’s output of 142,863 metric tons liveweight. Hog, with the biggest share to the livestock production, recorded a 0.12 percent drop in output.
CARABAO
In 2019, the region’s carabao production decreased by 10.30 percent at 8,587 metric tons liveweight from last year’s output of 9,573 metric tons liveweight. Production on both 1st semester and 2nd semester 2019 showed decreases of 6.34 percent and 14.23 percent respectively.
Lower carabao production in Ilocos Region in 2019 was contributed by decreases in the output of Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan. This may be attributed to lesser marketable stocks available for slaughter as more stocks were reserved as breeders in said provinces.
Total population of carabao in Ilocos Region as of January 1, 2019 was 169,996 heads. It increased by 0.24 percent from previous year’s inventory of 169,592 heads. Ilocos Sur and La Union increased in carabao head count as of January 1, 2019 by 2.99 percent and 7.00 percent respectively. On the otherhand, inventory as of January 2019 in Ilocos Norte and Pangasinan were lower by 2.08 and 2.46 percent respectively over the 2018 level.
The total number of carabao butchered in slaughterhouses in Ilocos Region in 2019 decreased by 8.05 percent over its 2018 level. Both the 1st semesters recorded decreases in the number of slaughtered carabao in slaughterhouses by 9.31 and 6.75 percent respectively.
The annual average farmgate price of carabao for slaughter in the region in 2019 was PhP107.65 per kilogram, liveweight. This was 1.44 percent higher than the 2018 farmgate price of PhP106.12 per kilogram, liveweight. During the reference period, the lowest farmgate price was recorded in March at PhP105.09 per kilogram, liveweight, while the highest was in December at PhP112.80 per kilogram, liveweight.
CATTLE
The total cattle production in llocos Region in 2019 was 28,239 metric tons, liveweight. This was 3.49 percent higher than the 2018 output of 27,288 metric tons, liveweight. Increases in output were recorded both in the 1st semesters of 2019 of about 3.08 percent and 3.90 percent respectively.
Relative to their levels in 2018, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and Pangasinan recorded increases in production while La Union reported a decrease of 5.94 percent in output.
The total inventory of cattle as of January 1, 2019 was 302,494 heads, an increase of 1.13 percent from previous year’s inventory of 299,111 heads. Increases in inventory were recorded in Ilocos Norte, La Union and Pangasinan by 1.80 percent, 0.58 percent and 1.76 percent respectively. Pangasinan recorded the most number of cattle raised in 2019 with 138,146 heads contributing 45.67 percent the total inventory of cattle in Ilocos Region.
A total number of 46,480 heads cattle were slaughtered in the region’s slaughterhouses in 2019. This increased by 5.71 percent over the 2018 level of 43,970 heads. More stocks were sold direct to slaughterhouses. The number of cattle butchered both in the 1st semesters of 2019 increased by 3.48 percent and 7.93 percent respectively.
Average monthly farmgate prices of cattle for slaughter in backyard farms in Ilocos Region in 2019 were generally higher than the 2018 monthly price levels. The farmgate price of PhP115.26 per kilo liveweight in January was the lowest price recorded in 2019. The price peaked up to PhP123.49 per kilo liveweight in December 2019. In 2018, farmgate price of cattle was lowest in February at PhP111.19 per kilo liveweight and highest in September at PhP116.09 per kilo liveweight.
HOG
The total volume of hog production in 2019 was 94,568 metric tons, liveweight. This was 0.12 percent lower compared with the previous year’s level of 94,684 metric tons liveweight. The decline in the region’s annual output was contributed by decrease in production during the 2nd semester 2019 by 4.60 percent.
Pangasinan, with the biggest share of 48.89 percent to the region’s hog production in 2019 recorded a decline of 3.58 percent over its 2018 level. Likewise, La Union’s output in 2019 decreased by 0.97 percent compared with its 2018 level. On the other hand, increases in hog production levels were recorded in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur by 5.62 percent and 6.53 percent respectively.
As of January 1, 2019, the total inventory of swine in the region was estimated at 627,816 heads, an increase of 4.79 percent compared with the previous year’s stocks of 599,143 heads. All the provinces reported increases in swine population as of January 1, 2019. Ilocos Norte posted the highest increase of 11.58 percent while Pangasinan recorded the lowest increase of 0.05 percent compared with their levels as of January 1, 2018.
The total number of hogs slaughtered in the region’s slaughterhouses in 2019 was recorded at 892,158 heads. This posted a slight growth of 0.09 percent over its 2018 level of 891,388 heads. Increase in the number of hogs slaughtered of 4.81 percent in the 1st semester 2019 was noted compared with same period of 2018. However, the number of heads slaughtered during the 2nd Semester 2019 decreased by 4.33 percent over the 2018 level. This may be attributed to the monitoring of Department of Agriculture in coordination with the Local Government Units (LGUs) and attached agencies of entry and/or ban of entry to the region of live swine and pork products possibly stricken with African Swine Fever.
The average monthly farmgate prices of hog for slaughter in backyard farms in Ilocos Region in 2019 were generally lower than the 2018 monthly price levels. In 2019, the highest price was recorded in July at PhP120.19 per kilo liveweight, while the lowest price was noted in November at PhP 108.02 per kilo liveweight.
GOAT
The total volume of goat production in 2019 was 11,200 metric tons, liveweight. This was lower by 1.04 percent from the 2018 recorded output of 11,318 metric tons, liveweight. Both La Union and Pangasinan reported decreases in production by 5.43 and 2.33 percent respectively. On the other hand, Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur posted increases in production by 4.61 percent and 3.56 percent respectively.
As of January 1, 2019, the total inventory of goat was estimated at 466,949 heads. This was 2.54 percent higher than its previous year’s level of 455,364 heads. This increment in inventory was contributed by increases of goat headcounts in Ilocos Norte and La Union by 0.16 percent and 12.52 percent respectively.
Around 1,277 heads of goat were slaughtered in the slaughterhouses in Ilocos Region in 2019. This was lower by 34.88 percent compared with last year’s level of 1,961 heads. This was contributed by decreases in the number of heads recorded in both 1st and 2nd semesters of 2019 by 39.14 percent and 29.22 percent respectively.
The average farmgate price of goat for slaughter in backyard farms in Ilocos Region in 2019 was recorded at PhP165.39 per kilo liveweight. The highest farmgate price was posted in February at PhP172.80 per kilo liveweight while the lowest farmgate price was recorded in November at PhP 161.71 per kilo liveweight.
In 2018, the average monthly farmgate price of goat for slaughter in backyard farms in the region was recorded at PhP159.70 per kilo liveweight. The highest farmgate price was observed in December at PhP186.93 per kilo liveweight while the lowest was posted in January at PhP146.88 per kilo liveweight.
