Production

The total volume of poultry production in Ilocos Region in 2019 was 106,178 metric tons liveweight. This posted a 0.12 percent decline over last year’s output of 106,302 metric tons liveweight. Chicken, with the biggest share to the poultry production, recorded a 0.83 percent drop in output while its by-product, chicken eggs, recorded an increase of 5.33 percent in output. Production of ducks and duck eggs in the region decreased by 17.36 and 11.56 percent respectively.

Chicken

In 2019, the region’s chicken production is lower at 84,230 metric tons liveweight compared with last year’s output of 84,993 metric tons liveweight. The contraction in production was noted in 1st semester 2019 with output of 42,272 metron tons liveweight, lower by 4.96 percent than 1st semester of  last year’s output of 44,478 metric tons liveweight.  

Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and Pangasinan recorded production decreases of 3.60 percent, 10.42 percent and 3.09 percent respectively. On the contrary, La Union posted an increase of 16.06 percent in its annual output in 2019.
 
Total inventory of chicken was recorded at  10.04 million heads as of January 1, 2019, an increase of 0.33 percent relative to last year’s level of 10.00 million heads. Out of the total headcount, 5.34 million heads or 53.21 percent were native chickens, 37.92 percent were broilers and the remaining 8.87 percent were layers.
 
Increases in headcounts as of January 1, 2019 were recorded in La Union (4.12%) and Pangasinan (0.29%) compared with their respective levels in 2018 of same period.  On the other hand, inventory of chickens as of January 1, 2019 in Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur decreased by 2.01 percent and 1.38 percent respectively.
 
The number of chickens dressed in Slaughterhouses and Poultry Dressing Plants (PDPs) in 2019 was estimated at 30.27 million heads, lower than the 2018 level by 5.07 percent. This
was contributed by decrease of 20.71 percent in the number of broilers dressed during the 1st semester 2019 compared with its 1st semester 2018 level.
 
The monthly average  farm prices of  chicken native live from January to August 2019 were higher than the prices last year of same period.  The annual average price of chicken native live in  2019  was PhP154.17 per kilogram liveweight, 2.80 percent higher than the 2018 average price of PhP149.97 per kilogram liveweight.   In 2019, the highest price was recorded in May at  PhP162.52 per kilogram liveweight.

 

Chicken Eggs

Chicken eggs, a by-product of chicken, had an output of 19,578 metric tons in 2019. This was 5.33 percent higher than the 2018 output of 18,588  metric tons. Increases in output were recorded both in the 1st and 2nd semesters of 2019  of about 6.64 percent and 4.15 percent respectively. 

 

By provincial contribution, Ilocos Norte with an output of 8,680 metric tons shared 44.34 percent to the total chicken egg production of the region.  Relative to 2018 level, Ilocos Norte recorded an increase of 27.40 percent in its output in 2019. On the other hand, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan posted decreases in production  by 22.99 percent , 5.29 percent and 3.41 percent respectively. 
 
Duck
The total volume of duck production in  2019  was 1,319  metric tons, liveweight. This was 17.36 percent higher compared with the previous year’s level of 1,596 metric tons liveweight. The  decline in the region’s annual output  was recorded both in the 1st and 2nd semesters of 2019 by 14.16 and 21.53 percent respectively. The contraction in the production can be attributed to lesser duck backyard raisers and closure of some commercial farms. 
 
Pangasinan, shared three-fourths or about 77.65 percent to the region’s duck production in 2019. The production in said province decreased by 21.20 percent,  from 1,300 metric tons liveweight  in 2018 to 1,025 metric tons in 2019. 
 
As of January 1, 2019, the region’s total duck inventory was 370,603 heads. This was 1.14 percent lower than the 2018 headcount of 374,858 heads. Decreases in inventory as of January 1, 2019 were recorded in Ilocos Sur and Pangasinan by 31.95 percent and 5.37 percent respectively.  On the other hand, the duck inventory of Ilocos Norte and La Union as of January 1, 2019 increased by 24.13 percent and 20.12 percent respectively. 
 
DUCK EGGS
The total volume of duck egg production of 1,048 metric tons in Ilocos Region in 2019 was 11.56 percent higher than its 2018 production of 1,185 metric tons. Decreases in output were recorded both in the 1st and 2nd semesters of 2019.
 
All provinces in the region recorded contraction in duck egg production in 2019. Pangasinan, that contributed more than half or 55.91 percent of the regions production, posted a decrease of 13.40 percent from its 2018 level of 677 metric tons.
