PRODUCTION

The region’s hog production from July-December 2019 was recorded at 44,854 metric tons liveweight. This was lower by 4.60 percent compared with the 2nd Semester 2018 level. Production on both 3rd quarter and 4th quarter 2019 showed decreases of 0.78 percent and 7.86 percent respectively.

Ilocos Region contributed 3.90 percent to the national production of 1,149,123 metric tons liveweight, ranking 9th among the top ten hog producing regions.

INVENTORY

The total inventory of swine in Ilocos Region as of July 1, 2019 was 629,374 heads. It increased by 3.90 percent from previous year’s inventory of 605,777 heads. Around 77.05 percent or 484,945 heads of swine were raised in backyard farms while the remaining 22.95 percent or 144,429 heads were raised in commercial farms.

As of October 1, 2019, total inventory of swine in the region was 618,680 heads, higher by 2.23 percent than last year’s level of 605,174 heads. The swine inventory in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur and La Union recorded increases as of October 1, 2019 by 12.95 percent, 2.27 percent and 1.62 percent respectively. On the other hand, inventory of swine in Pangasinan decreased by 4.66 percent. By percentage distribution, Pangasinan had the highest share of the total inventory of about 41.73 percent. This was followed by Ilocos Norte with 29.07 percent share, La Union with 15.77 percent share and Ilocos Sur with 13.43 percent share.

SLAUGHTERED IN SLAUGHTER HOUSES

 The total number of swine slaughtered during the 2nd semester 2019 decreased by 4.33 percent over the 2 nd Semester 2018 level. Lesser stocks were sold direct to slaughterhouses during the 4th quarter 2019.This is maybe attributed to the strict implementation and frequent monitoring of the Local Government Units (LGUs)and Department of Agriculture (DA) and attached agencies of possible entry in the region of live swine, pork and processed pork products afflicted with African Swine Fever.

PRICES

Average monthly farm prices of hog for slaughter in backyard farms from July to December 2019 were lower than the 2nd Semester 2018 level. A downward trend in price of hog was notable from PhP120.00 per kilo liveweight in July 2019 to PhP 108.02 per kilo liveweight in November 2019.

On the other hand, average retail prices of pork lean meat in July to September 2019 were higher than last year’s price of same period. However, average retail price of pork lean meat of PhP 214.32 per kilo in October 2019 decreased by 2.36 percent over the September 2019 price of PhP 219.51 and 1.71 percent over October 2018 price of PhP 218.04 per kilo.
