PRODUCTION

Total production of hog in the first half of the year 2019in Ilocos Region was 49,714 metric tons liveweight. This was 4.29 percent higher compared with its level in the same period of 2018. Production in both 1^st quarter and 2^nd quarter 2019 recorded increases of 7.43 percent and 1.59 percent respectively.

Ilocos Region contributed 4.33percent to the national production of 1,147,529 metric tons liveweight. It ranked 9th among the top ten hog producing regions.

INVENTORY

As of January 1, 2019, the total inventory of swine in Ilocos Region was 627,816 heads. It increased by 4.79 percent from the inventory of 599, 143 heads as of January 1, 2018. More than three-fourths (78.67%) or 493,894 heads of swine were raised in backyard farms. Meanwhile, the inventory of swine raised in commercial farms was recorded at 133,922 heads (21.33 %).

All provinces in the region recorded increases in swine inventory as of January 1, 2019.By percentage distribution, Pangasinan had the highest share of 43.10 of the total inventory. This was followed by Ilocos Norte with 26.46 percent share, La Union with 17.49 percent share and Ilocos Sur with 12.95 percent share.

SLAUGHTERED IN SLAUGHTERHOUSES

The total number of swine slaughtered during the 1^st semester 2019 increased by 4.81 percent over its level in 1^st semester 2018. This can be attributed to more stocks available in backyard and commercial farms sold directly to slaughterhouses in the region.

PRICES

The average farm price of hog in backyard farms in 1^st semester 2019 was Php 117.76 per kilo, lower by 4.07 percent compared with the average price of Php122.76 per kilo in the same period of 2018. There were also notable decreases in farm prices from January to June 2019 compared with the farm prices from January to June 2018.

On the other hand, retail prices of pork lean meat during the 1^st semester of 2019 was generally higher than last year’s retail prices. The average retail price of pork lean meat in 1^st Semester 2019 was Php 217.25 per kilo, 2.04 percent higher than the average of Php 212.90 per kilo last in the same period last year.

TECHNICAL NOTES

The data for this report are collected by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) through two major surveys, namely the Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS) and the Commercial Livestock and Poultry Survey (CLPS) which are conducted simultaneously every quarter in all provinces.

Another survey that supplements the data requirements of the subsector is the Compilation of Data from Slaughterhouses and Poultry Dressing Plant (CDSPDP). This covers the Accredited (AAA, AA) and Locally Registered Meat Establishments (LRMEs) nationwide and is undertaken in coordination with the National Meat Inspection Service (NMIS) and Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) of the four provinces.

Concepts and Definitions

• Production. Refers to the volume of indigenous (locally-raised) animals disposed for slaughter which include animals exported or shipped-out for slaughter (in “head” and in “liveweight equivalent”).

• Animal Inventory (also, Animal Population) – the number of domesticated animals in head present in the farm at specific reference date.

• Abattoir (also, Slaughterhouse) –the premises that are approved, registered and licensed by the Local Government Units in which food animals are slaughtered, dressed, inspected and hygienically handled in order to produce meat and offal that are safe and wholesome

• Backyard Farm/Raiser- refers to any farm or household raising at least one head of animal or bird and does not qualify as a commercial farm.

• Commercial Livestock Farm/Operator - refers to any livestock operator or farm which operation satisfies at least one of the following conditions: a) at least 21 head of adults and zero young b) at least 41 head of young animals c) at least 10 head of adults and 22 head of young animals.

• Commercial Poultry Farm/Operator- refers to any poultry operator or farm which operation satisfies at least one of the following conditions: a) 500 layers or 1,000 broilers b) 100 layers and 100 broilers if raised in combination c) 100 head of duck regardless of age.
• Slaughter-butchering of animals for human consumption and other uses

• Swine. A non-ruminant, cloven-footed animal belonging to family suidae with simple stomach, having a snout, large number of mammary glands, thin skin, and heavy bristles. It is also called hog or pig.
