Birth Statistics

The number of registered live births in Region I (Ilocos Region) during the third quarter of 2018 summed up to 23,839, a slight decrease of 0.7 percent compared to 24,008 births on the same period of 2017. The daily average birth occurrence during the third quarter of 2018 was computed at 259 births or an average of 11 babies born per hour. The month of September was observed to have the highest average daily births at 281 and 267 babies during the third quarter of 2017 and 2018, respectively.

 

 

The highest number of registered live births during the third quarter of 2017 and 2018 was recorded in the month of September. The percent share of the total births in September to the quarterly totals were 35.1 percent in 2017 and 33.6 percent in 2018.

The month of July was observed to have the least number of registered live births at 7,639 and 7,838 during the third quarter of 2017 and 2018, respectively.

 

 

 

Among the provinces in the region, the province of Pangasinan registered the highest number of births in the third quarter of 2018. Its share was more than half (63.0 percent share) of the total registered births in Region I. The province of La Union ranked second with 3,336 births (14.0 percent share), followed by the province of Ilocos Sur with 2,761 births (11.6 percent share) and the province of Ilocos Norte with 2,725 (11.4 percent share).

 

 

 

In third quarter of 2018, San Carlos City, Pangasinan ranked first among the top ten Cities/Municipalities that registered the highest number of live births with 2,770. This was followed by Dagupan City, Pangasinan with 2,581 births; City of San Fernando, La Union with 1,796 births; City of Urdaneta, Pangasinan with 1,563 births; and City of Alaminos, Pangasinan with 1,148 births. It was also observed that San Carlos City has higher registered births than the total registered births in the province of Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur in the third quarter of 2018.

On the other hand, the municipalities of Dumalneg of Ilocos Norte, Lidlidda, Gregorio Del Pilar and Sigay of Ilocos Sur had the lowest number of registered live birth in third quarter of 2018 with only one registered birth each. It was followed by Nagbukel, Ilocos Sur with two registered live births, Luna, La Union and Carasi, Ilocos Norte with four births each and Adams, Ilocos Norte with five registered births.

 

 

Males (12,356) outnumbered females (11,483) in terms of registered live births during the third quarter of 2018, resulting to a sex ratio of 108 males per 100 females.

Two (2) provinces posted a sex ratio that is lower than the regional ratio. The lowest sex ratio of 105 was recorded in Ilocos Norte, followed by Pangasinan with 107. On the other hand, La Union and Ilocos Sur recorded a sex ratio of 111, higher than the regional sex ratio.

 

 

In third quarter of 2018, there were 87.1 percent or 20,764 of total registered live births were attended by medical practitioners which may either be a physician, a nurse or a midwife. The province of La Union had the highest percentage of birth deliveries tended by health professionals with 91.4 percent of the total registered live births in the province followed by Pangasinan with 87.9 percent, Ilocos Norte with 84.1 percent and Ilocos Sur with 80.4 percent.

 

 

Marriage Statistics

There were 3,434 marriages registered during the third quarter of 2018, showing a decrease of 0.8 percent from the figure on the same period last year of 3,461 marriages.

Three provinces recorded a decrease in the number of registered marriages from third quarter of 2017 to third quarter of 2018. A bigger decrease was noted in La Union from 493 to 476 marriages (-3.4 percent), followed by Pangasinan from 2.010 to 1,968 marriages (-2.1 percent), while that of Ilocos Norte decreased from 557 to 550 marriages (1.3 percent).

On the other hand, the province that posted an increase in the number of registered marriages was Ilocos Sur from 401 to 440 marriages (9.7 percent).

 

 

The number of registered marriages in the province of Pangasinan went down to 1,968 during the third quarter of 2018 from 2.010 in the same quarter of 2017. The province of Pangasinan remained with the most number of registered marriages in the region. Ilocos Norte ranked second with 550 (16.0 percent share) followed by La Union with 476 (13.9 percent share). In third quarter of 2017, Ilocos Norte also ranked second with 557 marriages (16.1 percent share) while La Union ranked third with 493 marriages (14.2 percent share).

 

 

On the other end, the province of Ilocos Sur posted the least number of registered marriages during the third quarter of 2017 and 2018 with 401 (11.6 percent share) and 440 (12.8 percent share), respectively.

 

 

The month of July was the most preferred month to tie the knot during the third quarter of 2017 and 2018 with a total of 1,377 and 1,385 marriages, respectively. It corresponds to a daily average of 44 and 45 registered marriages respectively which surpassed the regional daily average number during the third quarter of 2017 and 2018. On the other hand, September recorded the least number of marriage occurrences during the third quarter of 2018. In the same period of last year, August was the least preferred month to tie the knot with a total of 1,008 marriages translating to a daily average of 33 registered marriages.

 

 

Death Statistics

A total of 9,153 deaths were registered during the third quarter of 2018. The figure indicated an increase of 4.6 percent death occurrences from the 2017 figure of 8,750.

The province of Pangasinan ranked first in terms of the number of registered deaths during the third quarter 2018, with a total of 5,359 or 58.5 percent share of the total registered deaths in the region. La Union placed second with 1,461 registered deaths (16.0 percent share), followed by Ilocos Sur with 1,191 (13.0 percent share) and Ilocos Norte with 1,142 (12.5 percent share).

In the same quarter of 2017, Pangasinan recorded 5,040 deaths or 57.6 percent of the total registered deaths in the region. La Union registered 1,372 (15.7 percent share), Ilocos Norte with 1,178 (13.5 percent share) and Ilocos Sur with 1,160 (13.3 percent share).

 

 

Comparing the two periods, only Ilocos Norte posted a decrease at 3.1 percent from 1,178 deaths in 2017 to 1,142 deaths in 2018. On the other hand, La Union reported the highest percent increase at 6.5 percent, followed by Pangasinan with 6.3 percent and Ilocos Sur with 2.7 percent increase.

 

 

The cities of Dagupan, San Carlos, San Fernando, Batac and Urdaneta posted the highest number of registered deaths in third quarter of 2018 with 995, 630, 624, 365 and 315 deaths, respectively. On the other hand, the municipalities of Carasi, Sigay, Sugpon, Lidlidda, Dumalneg, San Ildefonso, Quirino and Nagbukel recorded the least number in terms of the number of registered deaths: Carasi with two registered deaths; Sigay, with three deaths , and Alilem and Lidlidda with five death occurrences each. Sugpon, Lidlidda and Dumalneg with four deaths each and San Ildefonso, Quirino and Nagbukel with five deaths each.

 

During the third quarter of 2018, mortality was at its peak in the month of August with total registered deaths of 3,355. This figure was more than one-third of the regional quarterly total of 9,153 death occurrences. The number of deaths in the month of August 2018 translates to an average of 108 death occurrences per day. The figure was higher than the daily average death occurrences in the region. July 2018 posted the lowest number of registered deaths with 2,896 in third quarter of 2018.

 

 

In the same period of 2017, the highest number of registered deaths was also recorded in the month of August with 3,147 death occurrences, followed by the month of September with 2,904. The smallest number of registered deaths was in July with 2,699. August 2017 has the highest daily average of 102 death occurrences followed by September with a daily average of 97 death occurrences.

 

 

There were more death occurrences among males (5,100) than females (4,053) in Region I during the third quarter of 2018. The computed sex ratio during the quarter was 126 male deaths for every 100 female deaths.

La Union posted the highest sex ratio with 133, Ilocos Norte ranked second with 127 and followed by Pangasinan with 124. The lowest computed sex ratio of 123 male deaths per 100 female deaths was noted in Ilocos Sur.

Data on births, deaths and marriages presented in this release were obtained from the Certificate of Live Birth (Municipal Form 102), Certificate of Death (Municipal Form 103) and Certificate of Marriage (Municipal Form No. 97) that were registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority - Provincial Statistical Offices in Region I. Information included births, deaths and marriages registered in July to September 2018 and July to September 2017.
