Birth Statistics
The number of registered live births in Region I (Ilocos Region) during the first quarter of 2018 summed up to 21,813, a decrease of 5.1 percent compared to 22,982 births at the same period of 2017. The daily average birth occurrence during the first quarter of 2018 was computed at 242 births or an average of 10 babies born per hour. Consistently, the month of January was observed to have the highest average daily births at 276 and 272 babies during the first quarter of 2017 and 2018, respectively.
The highest number of registered live births during the first quarter of 2017 and 2018 was recorded in the month of January. The percent share of the total births in January to the quarterly totals were 37.3 percent in 2017 and 38.6 percent in 2018.
The month of February was observed to have the least number of registered live births at 6,796 and 6,468 during the first quarter of 2017 and 2018, respectively.
Among the provinces in the region, the province of Pangasinan registered the highest number of births in the first quarter of 2018. Its share was more than half (61.8 percent share) of the total registered births in Region I. The province of La Union ranked second with 3,087 births (14.2 percent share), followed by the province of Ilocos Sur with 2,823 births (12.9 percent share) and the province of Ilocos Norte with 2,414 (11.1 percent share).
In first quarter of 2018, Dagupan City, Pangasinan ranked first among the top ten Cities/Municipalities in Region I that registered the highest number of live births with 2,321. This was followed by San Carlos City, Pangasinan with 2,169 births; City of San Fernando, La Union with 1,580 births; City of Urdaneta, Pangasinan with 1,403 births; and City of Alaminos, Pangasinan with 1,037 births.
On the other hand, the municipalities of Sigay, Ilocos Sur and Adams, Ilocos, Norte, had the lowest number of registered live births in first quarter of 2018 with two registered births each. It was followed by San Esteban and Dumalneg with three registered live births each and Burgos, La Union, Banayoyo, Burgos, Ilocos Sur and Carasi, Ilocos Norte with four registered births each.
Males (11,237) outnumbered females (10,576) in terms of registered live births during the first quarter of 2018, resulting to a sex ratio of 106 males per 100 females.
Pangasinan posted a sex ratio of 107 which is higher than the regional ratio. The sex ratio of 106 males per 100 females was recorded in La Union followed by Ilocos Norte with 104. On the other hand, Ilocos Sur posted the lowest sex ratio in the region with 103.
In first quarter of 2018, there were 84.4 percent or 18,412 of total registered live births were attended by medical practitioners which may either be a physician, a nurse or a midwife. The province of La Union had the highest percentage of birth deliveries tended by health professionals with 91.0 percent of the total registered live births in the province followed by Pangasinan with 85.1 percent, Ilocos Norte with 79.9 percent and Ilocos Sur with 77.9 percent.
Marriage Statistics
There were 8,648 marriages registered during the first quarter of 2018, showing a decrease of 1.9 percent from the figure over the same period last year of 8,812 marriages.
Only the province of Pangasinan posted an increase in the number of registered marriages in the region from 5,481 to 5,575 marriages (1.7 percent).
Three provinces recorded a decrease in the number of registered marriages from first quarter of 2017 to first quarter of 2018. The biggest decrease was noted in Ilocos Norte from 986 to 804 marriages (18.5 percent), followed by Ilocos Sur from 1,027 to 971 marriages (5.5 percent), while that of La Union decreased from 1,318 to 1,298 marriages (1.5 percent).
The province of Pangasinan remained with the most number of registered marriages in the region in first quarter of 2018. La Union ranked second with 1,298 (15.0 percent share) followed by Ilocos Sur with 971 (11.2 percent share). In same period a year ago, La Union also ranked second with 1,318 marriages (15.0 percent share) while Ilocos Sur ranked third with 1,027 marriages (11.7 percent share).
On the other end, the province of Ilocos Norte posted the least number of registered marriages during the first quarter of 2017 and 2018 with 986 (11.2 percent share) and 804 (9.3 percent share), respectively.
The month of January was the most preferred month to tie the knot during the first quarter of 2017 and 2018 with a total of 3,756 and 3,918 marriages, respectively. It corresponds to a daily average of 121 and 126 registered marriages, respectively which surpassed the regional daily average number during the first quarter of 2017 and 2018. On the other hand, March recorded the least number of marriage occurrences during the first quarter of 2017 and 2018 with a total of 2,371 and 2,083 marriages translating to a daily average of 76 and 67 registered marriages, respectively.
Marriages contracted through civil rites topped the list among all types of marriages ceremonies in first quarter of 2018. It comprised 4,031 marriages or 46.61 percent of the total reported marriages. Marriages officiated in Roman Catholic Church ranked second with 3,267 marriages or 37.78 percent share followed by other religious rites with 1,332 or 15.40 percent.
In same period last year, marriages officiated in Roman Catholic Church registered the highest number of marriages with 4,683 marriages or 53.14 percent share, followed by civil rites with 2,928 marriages or 33.23 percent share.
On the other end, marriages carried out under tribal rites posted the lowest number of registered marriages both in first quarter 2017 and first quarter 2018 with one and three marriages, respectively.
Death Statistics
A total of 8,538 deaths were registered during the first quarter of 2018. The figure indicated a slight increase of 0.4 percent death occurrences from the 2017 figure of 8,508.
The province of Pangasinan ranked first in terms of the number of registered deaths during the first quarter 2018, with a total of 4,889 or 57.3 percent share of the total registered deaths in the region. La Union placed second with 1,360 registered deaths (15.9 percent share), followed by Ilocos Norte with 1,147 (13.4 percent share) and Ilocos Sur with 1,142 (13.4 percent share).
In the same quarter of 2017, Pangasinan recorded 4,823 deaths or 56.7 percent of the total registered deaths in the region. Distantly followed by La Union with 1,362 (16.0 percent share), Ilocos Sur with 1,178 (13.8 percent share) and Ilocos Norte with 1,145 (13.5 percent share).
Ilocos Sur reported the highest percent decrease at 3.1 percent, followed by La Union with 0.1 percent decrease. Comparing the two periods, Pangasinan posted an increase of 1.4 percent from 4,823 deaths in 2017 to 4,889 deaths in 2018.
The cities of Dagupan, San Fernando, San Carlos, Batac and Urdaneta posted the highest number of registered deaths in first quarter of 2018 with 850, 602, 485, 362 and 254 deaths, respectively. On the other hand, the municipalities of San Ildefonso, Adams, Sugpon, Dumalneg, Sigay, Lidlidda, Bagulin, San Emilio and Nagbukel had the least number in terms of the number of registered deaths: San Ildefonso with two registered deaths; Adams, Sugpon, Dumalneg, Sigay and Lidlidda with three deaths each and Bagulin, San Emilio and Nagbukel with five death occurrences each.
During the first quarter of 2018, mortality was at its peak in the month of January with total registered deaths of 3,307. This figure was more than one-third of the regional quarterly total of 8,538 death occurrences. The number of deaths in the month of January 2018 translates to an average of 107 death occurrences per day. The figure was higher than the daily average death occurrences in the region which is 95. March posted the lowest number of registered deaths with 2,559 in first quarter of 2018.
In the same period of 2017, the highest number of registered deaths was also in the month of January with 2,995 death occurrences, followed by the month of March with 2,826. The smallest number of registered deaths was in February with 2,687. January 2017 has the highest daily average of 97 death occurrences followed by February with a daily average of 96 death occurrences.
There were more death occurrences among males (4,767) than females (3,771) in Region I during the first quarter of 2018. The computed sex ratio during the quarter was 126 male deaths for every 100 female deaths.
La Union posted the highest sex ratio with 129, Pangasinan ranked second with 127 and followed by Ilocos Norte with 124. The lowest computed sex ratio of 123 male deaths per 100 female deaths was noted in Ilocos Sur.

Data on births, deaths and marriages presented in this release were obtained from the Certificate of Live Birth (Municipal Form 102), Certificate of Death (Municipal Form 103) and Certificate of Marriage (Municipal Form No. 97) that were registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority - Provincial Statistical Offices in Region I. Information included births, deaths and marriages registered in January to March 2017 and January to March 2018.
