The performance of palay production in Region I in 2nd quarter 2017 posted positive growth, while corn production dropped as compared to its respective level in 2nd quarter 2016.
Palay
The overall palay production in Region in April-June 2017 went up by 13.8 percent from 140,174 metric tons to 159,542 metric tons. There were movement of harvest from first quarter 2017, and more water supply available from irrigation systems and rehabilitation of irrigation canals. The total harvest area increased from 31,890 hectares to 34,273 hectares. With the availability of sufficient water, coupled with increased usage of hybrid and inbred seeds, the overall yield per hectare also went up from 4.40 metric tons last year to 4.66 metric tons this year.
The province of Pangasinan shared 77.1 percent to the total palay production in Region I in 2nd quarter 2017. Palay production output of the province went up from 105,307 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2016 to 123,083 metric tons this 2nd quarter 2017. More plantings were observed due to sufficient water and rehabilitation of irrigation systems, and increased usage of quality hybrid and inbred seeds. The overall yield per hectare improved from 4.30 metric tons to 4.61 metric tons.
The province of Ilocos Norte, which ranked second in terms of volume of palay production in 2nd quarter 2017, posted lower output as compared in 2nd quarter 2016 level. Its production during the quarter was posted at 21,912 metric tons, lower than the 22,845 metric tons recorded in the same period last year. Lesser area were harvested as some plantings were already harvested in the 1st quarter of this year. However, the overall yield per hectare improved from 4.81 metric tons to 4.97 metric tons due to availability of seeds from DA-RFO I and LGUs, and presence of favorable rains in the early growth stage of the crop.
Palay production in the province of La Union increased by 4.6 percent in 2nd quarter 2017. From its level of production of 10,087 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2016, it grew to 10,548 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2017. More plantings were observed due to sufficient water supply and rehabilitation of irrigation canals. The total harvest area expanded from 2,220 hectares to 2,321 hectares. Its overall yield per hectare remains stable at 4.54 metric tons.
Palay production of Ilocos Sur registered positive growth in 2nd quarter 2017. From the output of 1,935 metric tons in the same period in 2016, it grew to 3,999 metric tons this year. Some plantings that supposed to be harvested in 1st quarter 2017 were harvested in 2nd quarter 2017. Thus, area harvested expanded from 431 hectares to 840 hectares. Overall yield per hectare also improved from 4.49 metric tons to 4.76 metric tons.
In terms of area harvested, the province of Pangasinan has the largest, with 77.9 percent share. It was followed by Ilocos Norte with 12.9 percent, La Union with 6.8 percent, and Ilocos Sur with 2.5 percent.
Corn
Corn production went down by 9.5 percent in 2nd quarter 2017. From 173,493 metric tons output in 2nd quarter 2016, it declined to 156,942 metric tons this year. Both white and yellow corn posted decreases in output. The province of Pangasinan registered lower output and pulled down the overall corn production performance of the region. Total harvest area decreased from 31,296 hectares to 27,598 hectares due to unavailability of water during the planting schedules, movement of harvest to 1st quarter 2017, and shifting to other commodities. Meanwhile, overall yield per hectare grew from 5.54 metric tons to 5.69 metric tons due to presence of favorable rains during the vegetative stage, and increased usage of hybrid and OPV seeds.
The province of Pangasinan shared the bulk of corn harvest during the 2nd quarter 2017, with a share of 59.1 percent to the total corn production in Region I. However, its production went down by 17.6 percent from the output of 112,624 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2016. The overall harvest area of the province were reduced from 20,125 hectares to 16,143 hectares as some were not planted due to unavailability of water, and some farmers shifted plantings to other crops like onion, squash, and ampalaya. Meanwhile, the overall yield per hectare improved from 5.60 metric tons to 5.75 metric tons due to increased usage of quality seeds.
The province of Ilocos Sur, which ranked second in terms of volume of production, posted higher output of 34,369 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2017 as compared to 33,054 metric tons registered in 2nd quarter 2016. Harvest area expanded from 5,998 hectares to 6,078 hectares due to availability of quality seeds, and presence of favorable rains. The overall yield per hectare of the province also improved from 5.51 metric tons to 5.65 metric tons.
Corn production of Ilocos Norte went up from 16,883 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2016 to 16,903 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2017, despite the decrease in its total area harvested. The overall positive growth in output was contributed by the increased usage of quality hybrid and OPV seeds, and presence of favorable rains during the reproductive stage. The overall yield per hectare of the province improved from 5.67 metric tons to 5.82 metric tons. Meanwhile, its overall harvest area went down by 2.4 percent as some areas were not planted due to unavailability of water during the planting schedule, and movement of harvest to 1st quarter 2017.
The province of La Union also registered positive growth in corn output in 2nd quarter 2017. From 10,932 metric tons volume of production in 2nd quarter 2016, it went up to 12,898 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2017. The harvest area of the province expanded from 2,196 hectares to 2,471 hectares due to increased plantings from in-fallows, and shifting of some tobacco farmers to yellow corn farming. Overall yield per hectare also went up from 4.98 metric tons to 5.22 metric tons.
In terms of harvest area of corn, the province of Pangasinan has the largest in 2nd quarter 2017. It shared 58.5 percent to the total harvest area of Region I. It was followed by Ilocos Sur with 22.0 percent, Ilocos Norte with 10.5 percent, and La Union with 9.0 percent.
Meanwhile, corn areas of the region were planted with 85.7 percent of yellow corn, while 14.3 percent were planted with white corn in 2nd quarter 2017.
