Corn production in the province of Ilocos Norte decreased by 6.10 percent during the fourth quarter of 2024 compared with the production in the same period of 2023. A total of 3,509 metric tons were harvested registering 228 metric tons decrease over last year.
By crop type, 919 metric tons of white corn was harvested in the province of Ilocos Norte in the fourth quarter of 2024 which has increased from last year’s production of 858 metric tons. On the other hand, the harvested yellow corn during the reference period totaled 2,590 metric tons. The 2024 production recorded a decrease of 6.10 percent compared to the production of 3,737 in the same quarter of 2023 (Figure 1).

The province of Ilocos Norte had the highest volume of corn production among the four provinces in Ilocos Region in the fourth quarter of 2024. From the region’s total production of 11,114.63 metric tons, 31.57 percent was contributed by Ilocos Norte. The province of Pangasinan, seconded with 30.86 percent share, followed by the province of Ilocos Sur with 25.22 percent. La Union ranked fourth with 12.35 percent contribution (Figure 2).

The total corn area harvested in the province of Ilocos Norte during the reference period in 2024 was 685 hectares. This is 7.81 percent decreased from the total harvested corn area of 743 hectares in 2023.
By crop type, yellow corn had the larger area harvested, with a total of 456 hectares, representing 66.6% of the total corn area in the province (685 hectares) in 2024. The recorded area was lower by 11.6% compared to the same quarter in 2023, which had 516 hectares. White corn, on the other hand, had an area of 229 hectares in 2024, accounting for 33.4% of the total corn area, slightly higher than the 227 hectares in 2023.

The average yield of corn in the fourth quarter of 2024 increased from 5.58 to 5.68 metric tons per hectare compared to the fourth quarter in 2023. By ecosystem, the yield of white corn improved from 3.78 to 4.01 metric tons per hectare, or an additional 0.23 metric tons per hectare (approximately 4.6 cavans per hectare). Yellow corn also saw an increase from 5.58 metric tons per hectare to 5.68 metric tons per hectare, translating to an additional 0.10 metric tons per hectare (approximately 2 cavans per hectare).

CONCEPTS AND DEFINITIONS
Crop production - refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested for a particular crop during the reference period. It includes those harvested but damaged, stolen, given away, consumed, given as harvester’s share, reserved, etc. It excludes those produced but not harvested due to low price, lack of demand, force majeure, or fortuitous events, etc.
Area planted - refers to the actual physical area planted.
Area harvested - refers to the actual area from which harvests were realized. This excludes crop areas which were totally damaged. It may be smaller than the area planted.
Yellow corn - Used generally as feed grains. It includes all types of corn other than white.
White corn - Type of corn used primarily for human consumption.
