The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) – La Union Provincial Statistical Office carried out the 2nd Quarter 2024 Fisheries Survey in the province on 10 to 21 June 2024. This survey includes the Quarterly Aquaculture Survey (QAqS) and Quarterly Inland Municipal Survey (QIFS).

The surveys aim to collect data on the volume and value of production in aquaculture and inland fisheries, categorized by aquafarm type and species. The statistics that will be produced from these surveys will be used for compiling national accounts, assessing agricultural performance, policy making and program implementation, as well as supporting research and studies.

For this purpose, the PSA-La Union hired and trained six (6) Statistical Researchers (SRs) who will visit 238 aquafarm operators, along with two (2) SRs assigned to visit 97 inland fishing households. These activities will be conducted in coordination with the Local Government Units (LGUs).

All information obtained from the respondents will be treated with utmost confidentiality. According to Section 26 of Republic Act (RA) No. 10625, “Individual data furnished by a respondent to statistical inquiries, surveys, and censuses conducted by the PSA shall be considered privilege communication and shall be inadmissible as evidence in any proceeding.”

Meanwhile, the key results of the 1st Quarter 2024 Fisheries Surveys in La Union are the following:

  • La Union ranked second among the provinces of Ilocos Region in terms of fisheries volume of production in 1st quarter 2024. It contributed 7.74 percent to the total volume of fish production in the region.

  • The total volume of fisheries production in 1st quarter 2024 was estimated at 2,567.00 metric tons which was 22.14 percent lower than 3,297.10 metric tons estimate in 1st quarter of 2023.

  • Among the fisheries subsectors, municipal fisheries posted the largest contribution (75.27%) to the fisheries output in the province in 1st quarter 2024. Municipal fisheries production was estimated at 1,932.23 metric tons in 1st quarter 2024 lower by 17.86 percent than its output of 2,352.42 metric tons in 1st quarter 2023.

  • Aquaculture ranked second with 564.89 metric tons contributing 22.01 percent to the total fisheries production of the province. The 1st quarter 2024 production showed a decrease of 23.64 percent from the 739.75 metric tons production in 1st quarter 2023.

  • Commercial fisheries had the smallest (2.72%) contribution to the fisheries volume of production in the province at 69.88 metric tons. It showed a decrease of 65.90 percent from the 204.93 metric tons in 1st quarter 2023.

  • The total value of all fisheries production in La Union in 1st quarter 2024 was recorded at PhP444,157.05 which was 79 percent lower than its value in the same quarter of last year at PhP575,268.53.

The total municipal fisheries production in La Union went up by 6.87 percent from the estimated production of 453.66 metric tons in 4th quarter 2022 to 484.84 metric tons in 4th quarter 2023.
