John Carlo M. Gayo, a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science freshman from Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University-South La Union Campus (DMMMSU-SLUC), ranked first during the 27^th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) provincial elimination held on 09 October 2023 at the Legislative Building, Provincial Capitol, City of San Fernando, La Union.

The top three spots were completed by John Matthew C. Co, a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) freshman from Saint Louis College (SLC), and Alexis A. Estoesta, a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics freshman from DMMMSU-SLUC, who landed second and third, respectively.

The top three winners in the 27^th PSQ will represent the province of La Union in the upcoming 27^th PSQ Regional Championships on 10 November 2023.

The 27^th PSQ provincial elimination was organized by the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) and the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) - La Union Provincial Statistical Office, through the Provincial Statistics Committee (PSC) of La Union, in line with the activities conducted in celebration of the 34^th National Statistics Month (NSM).

The PSQ is a nationwide annual contest designed to test the knowledge in statistics of freshman students enrolled in colleges and universities in the 17 regions of the country.  The PSQ aims to assess the competency and skills of students in statistics as acquired from the secondary education curriculum; to promote, enhance, and instill awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of science, statistics in particular, among the students; and to generate public awareness on the importance of statistics in all development planning activities and win overall support for all government statistical activities.

The PSA, the central statistical authority of the Philippine Government on primary data collection, and the Philippine Statistical Association, Incorporated (PSAI) a non-stock, non-profit organization of professional statisticians from the government and non-government agencies, and the academe, are the organizers of this year’s event. The annual competition was a fruitful partnership between the National Statistics Office (NSO), which is now part of the PSA pursuant to Republic Act No. 10625, and the PSAI since 1992. 

The 27^th PSQ is open to all Filipino first-time first-year college students currently enrolled for the School Year (SY) 2023-2024 in any recognized tertiary academic institution in the country. First-time first-year college students are those who have enrolled for not more than two semesters (or its equivalent term) in college.
