Birth Statistics
The number of registered live births in Region I (Ilocos Region) during the third quarter of 2017 summed up to 24,008, a decrease of 6.3 percent compared to 25,615 births on the same period of 2016. The daily average birth occurrence during the third quarter of 2017 was computed at 261 births or an average of 11 babies born per hour. The month of September was observed to have the highest average daily births at 307 and 281 babies during the third quarter of 2016 and 2017, respectively.
The highest number of registered live births during the third quarter of 2016 and 2017 was recorded in the month of September. The percent share of the total births in September to the quarterly totals were 36.0 percent in 2016 and 35.1 percent in 2017.
The month of July was observed to have the least number of registered live births at 7,967 and 7,639 during the third quarter of 2016 and 2017, respectively.
Among the provinces in the region, the province of Pangasinan registered the highest number of births in the third quarter of 2017. Its share was more than half (62.7 percent share) of the total registered births in Region I. The province of La Union ranked second with 3,405 births (14.2 percent share), followed by the province of Ilocos Norte with 2,833 births (11.8 percent share) and the province of Ilocos Sur with 2,708 (11.3 percent share).
In third quarter of 2017, San Carlos City, Pangasinan ranked first among the top ten Cities/Municipalities that registered the highest number of live births with 2,849. This was followed by Dagupan City, Pangasinan with 2,572 births; City of San Fernando, La Union with 1,855 births; City of Urdaneta, Pangasinan with 1,475 births; and City of Alaminos, Pangasinan with 1,247 births. It was also observed that San Carlos City has higher registered births than the total registered births in the province of Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur in the third quarter of 2017.
On the other hand, Lidlidda, San Esteban and Sigay, all these municipalities in Ilocos Sur had the lowest number of registered live birth in third quarter of 2017 with three registered births each. It was followed by Burgos, Ilocos Norte, Nagbukel, Ilocos Sur and Laoac, Pangasinan with four registered live births each and Burgos, Ilocos Sur and Santo Tomas, Pangasinan with five registered births each.
Males (12,452) outnumbered females (11,556) in terms of registered live births during the third quarter of 2017, resulting to a sex ratio of 108 males per 100 females.
Three (3) provinces posted a sex ratio that is lower than the regional ratio. The lowest sex ratio of 106 was recorded in Ilocos Sur and La Union, followed by Ilocos Norte with 107. On the other hand, Pangasinan recorded a sex ratio same as the regional ratio.
In third quarter of 2017, there were about 88 percent or 21,220 of total registered live births were attended by medical practitioners which may either be a physician, a nurse or a midwife. The province of Pangasinan had the highest number of birth deliveries attended by health professionals with 13,412 or 63.2 percent followed by La Union with 3,127 or 14.7 percent, Ilocos Norte with 2,380 or 11.2 percent and Ilocos Sur with 2,301 or 10.8 percent.
Marriage Statistics
There were 3,461 marriages registered during the third quarter of 2017, showing an increase of 5.0 percent from the figure on the same period last year of 3,296 marriages.
Three provinces recorded an increase in the number of registered marriages from third quarter of 2016 to third quarter of 2017. A bigger increase was noted in La Union from 435 to 493 marriages (13.3 percent), followed by Ilocos Norte from 507 to 557 marriages (9.9 percent), while that of Pangasinan increased from 1,934 to 2,010 marriages (3.9 percent).
On the other hand, the province that posted a decrease in the number of registered marriages was Ilocos Sur from 420 to 401 marriages (4.5 percent).
The number of registered marriages in the province of Pangasinan went up to 2,010 during the third quarter of 2017 from 1,934 in the same quarter of 2016. The province of Pangasinan remained with the most number of registered marriages in the region. Ilocos Norte ranked second with 557 (16.1 percent share) followed by La Union with 493 (14.2 percent share). In 2016, Ilocos Norte also ranked second with 507 marriages (15.4 percent share) while La Union ranked third with 435 marriages (13.2 percent share).
On the other end, the province of Ilocos Sur posted the least number of registered marriages during the third quarter of 2016 and 2017 with 420 (12.7 percent share) and 401 (11.6 percent share), respectively.
The month of July was the most preferred month to tie the knot during the third quarter of 2016 and 2017 with a total of 1,261 and 1,377 marriages, respectively. It corresponds to a daily average of 41 and 44 registered marriages respectively which surpassed the regional daily average number during the third quarter of 2016 and 2017. On the other hand, August recorded the least number of marriage occurrences during the third quarter of 2017. In the same period of last year, September was the least preferred month to tie the knot with a total of 915 marriages translating to a daily average of 31 registered marriages.
Death Statistics
A total of 8,750 deaths were registered during the third quarter of 2017. The figure indicated a decrease of 4.4 percent death occurrences from the 2016 figure of 9,155.
The province of Pangasinan ranked first in terms of the number of registered deaths during the third quarter 2017, with a total of 5,040 or 57.6 percent share of the total registered deaths in the region. La Union placed second with 1,372 registered deaths (15.7 percent share), followed by Ilocos Norte with 1,178 (13.5 percent share) and Ilocos Sur with 1,160 (13.3 percent share).
In the same quarter of 2016, Pangasinan recorded 5,384 deaths or 58.8 percent of the total registered deaths in the region. La Union registered 1,398 (15.3 percent share), Ilocos Sur with 1,229 (13.4 percent share) and Ilocos Norte with 1,144 (12.5 percent share).
Comparing the two periods, only Ilocos Norte posted an increase at 3.0 percent from 1,144 deaths in 2016 to 1,178 deaths in 2017. On the other hand, Pangasinan reported the highest percent decrease at 6.4 percent followed by Ilocos Sur with 5.6 percent and La Union with 1.9 percent decrease.
The cities of Dagupan, San Fernando, San Carlos, Batac and Urdaneta posted the highest number of registered deaths in third quarter of 2017 with 1,001, 603, 526, 340 and 280 deaths, respectively. On the other hand, the municipalities of Carasi, Sigay, Nagbukel, Dumalneg, Adams, Lidlidda and Alilem had the least number in terms of the number of registered deaths: Carasi and Sigay with two registered deaths each; Nagbukel, Dumalneg and Adams with four deaths each and Alilem and Lidlidda with five death occurrences each.
During the third quarter of 2017, mortality was at its peak in the month of August with total registered deaths of 3,147. This figure was more than one-third of the regional quarterly total of 8,750 death occurrences. The number of deaths in the month of August 2017 translates to an average of 102 death occurrences per day. The figure was higher than the daily average death occurrences in the region. July 2017 posted the lowest number of registered deaths with 2,699 in third quarter of 2017.
In the same period of 2016, the highest number of registered deaths was in the month of September with 3,537 death occurrences, followed by the month of August with 2,983. The smallest number of registered deaths was in July with 2,635. September 2016 has the highest daily average of 118 death occurrences followed by August with a daily average of 96 death occurrences.
There were more death occurrences among males (4,958) than females (3,792) in Region I during the third quarter of 2017. The computed sex ratio during the quarter was 131 male deaths for every 100 female deaths.
Ilocos Sur posted the highest sex ratio with 136, Pangasinan ranked second with 132 and followed by Ilocos Norte with 128. The lowest computed sex ratio of 126 male deaths per 100 female deaths was noted in La Union.
