Birth Statistics

The number of registered live births in Region I (Ilocos Region) during the fourth quarter of 2018 summed up to 25,259, a decrease of 2.7 percent compared to 25,967 births on the same period of 2017. The daily average birth occurrence during the fourth quarter of 2018 was computed at 275 births or an average of 12 babies born per hour. The month of October was observed to have the highest average daily births at 293 in fourth quarter of 2018. While in same period a year ago, the month of November recorded the highest average daily births at 302.

The highest number of registered live births during the fourth quarter of 2018 was recorded in the month of October. The percent share of the total births in October to the quarterly totals was 35.9 percent in 2018. On the other hand, November registered the highest number of live births during the fourth quarter of 2017 with 34.9 percent.

The month of December was observed to have the least number of registered live births at 7,988 and 7,595 during the fourth quarter of 2017 and 2018, respectively.

Among the provinces in the region, the province of Pangasinan registered the highest number of births in the fourth quarter of 2018.  Its share was more than half (63.0 percent share) of the total registered births in Region I. The province of La Union ranked second with 3,510 births (13.9 percent share), followed by the province of Ilocos Sur with 3,040 births (12.0 percent share) and the province of Ilocos Norte with 2,803 (11.1 percent share).

 

In fourth quarter of 2018, San Carlos City, Pangasinan ranked first among the top ten Cities/Municipalities in Region I that registered the highest number of live births with 3,074. This was followed by Dagupan City, Pangasinan with 3,008 births; City of San Fernando, La Union with 1,883 births; City of Urdaneta, Pangasinan with 1,696 births; and City of Alaminos, Pangasinan with 1,264 births. It was also observed that San Carlos City has higher registered births than the total registered births in the province of Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte in the fourth quarter of 2018. 

 On the other hand, the municipalities of Laoac, Pangasinan and Gregorio Del Pilar, Ilocos Sur had the lowest number of registered live birth in fourth quarter of 2018 with two registered births each. It was followed by Sigay, Ilocos Sur, Pinili and Dumalneg, Ilocos Norte with three registered live births each and San Esteban and San Emilio, Ilocos Sur with five registered births each.

Males (13,108) outnumbered females (12,151) in terms of registered live births during the fourth quarter of 2018, resulting to a sex ratio of 108 males per 100 females. Ilocos Sur posted a sex ratio of 113 which is higher than the regional ratio. The sex ratio of 108 was recorded in Pangasinan. On the other hand, two provinces posted a sex ratio that is lower than the regional ratio. The lowest sex ratio of 104 was recorded in La Union, followed by Ilocos Norte with 105.

In fourth quarter of 2018, there were 89.1 percent or 22,503 of total registered live births were attended by medical practitioners which may either be a physician, a nurse or a midwife. The province of La Union had the highest percentage of birth deliveries tended by health professionals with 92.5 percent of the total registered live births in the province followed by Pangasinan with 90.1 percent, Ilocos Sur with 84.9 percent and Ilocos Norte with 83.7 percent.

Marriage Statistics

 

There were 5,041 marriages registered during the fourth quarter of 2018, showing a slight increase of 0.4 percent from the figure on the same period last year of 5,022 marriages. 

Although there is an increase, three provinces recorded a decrease in the number of registered marriages from fourth quarter of 2017 to fourth quarter of 2018.  A bigger decrease was noted in Ilocos Sur from 692 to 633 marriages (-8.5 percent), followed by Ilocos Norte from 615 to 603 marriages (-2.0 percent), while that of La Union decreased from 815 to 811 marriages (-0.5 percent). 

On the other hand, the only province that posted an increase in the number of registered marriages was Pangasinan from 2,900 to 2,994 marriages (3.2 percent).

The number of registered marriages in the province of Pangasinan went up to 2,994 during the fourth quarter of 2018 from 2,900 in the same quarter of 2017. The province of Pangasinan remained with the most number of registered marriages in the region. La Union ranked second with 811 (16.1 percent share) followed by Ilocos Sur with 633 (12.6 percent share). In same period a year ago, La Union also ranked second with 815 marriages (16.2 percent share) while Ilocos Sur ranked third with 692 marriages (13.8 percent share).

On the other end, the province of Ilocos Norte posted the least number of registered marriages during the fourth quarter of 2017 and 2018 with 615 (12.2 percent share) and 603 (12.0 percent share), respectively.  

The month of December was the most preferred month to tie the knot during the fourth quarter of 2017 and 2018 with a total of 2,882 and 2,825 marriages, respectively. It corresponds to a daily average of 93 and 91 registered marriages, respectively which surpassed the regional daily average number during the fourth quarter of 2017 and 2018. On the other hand, October recorded the least number of marriage occurrences during the fourth quarter of 2017 and 2018 with a total of 1.065 and 1,032 marriages translating to a daily average of 34 and 33 registered marriages, respectively.

Death Statistics

A total of 8,470 deaths were registered during the fourth quarter of 2018.  The figure indicated a decrease of 4.2 percent death occurrences from the 2017 figure of 8,838.

The province of Pangasinan ranked first in terms of the number of registered deaths during the fourth quarter of 2018, with a total of 4,986 or 58.9 percent share of the total registered deaths in the region.  La Union placed second with 1,266 registered deaths (14.9 percent share), followed by Ilocos Sur with 1,118 (13.2 percent share) and Ilocos Norte with 1,100 (13.0 percent share).

In the same quarter of 2017, Pangasinan recorded 5,104 deaths or 57.8 percent of the total registered deaths in the region. La Union registered 1,439 (16.3 percent share), Ilocos Sur with 1,220 (13.8 percent share) and Ilocos Norte with 1,075 (12.2 percent share).

La Union reported the highest percent decrease at 12.0 percent, followed by Ilocos Sur with 8.4 percent and Pangasinan with a 2.3 percent decrease. Comparing the two periods, only Ilocos Norte posted an increase at 2.3 percent from 1,075 deaths in 2017 to 1,100 deaths in 2018.

The cities of Dagupan, San Carlos, San Fernando, Batac and Urdaneta posted the highest number of registered deaths in the fourth quarter of 2018 with 955, 576, 475, 338 and 292 deaths, respectively. On the other hand, the municipalities of Dumalneg, Adams, Sigay, Carasi, Sugpon, San Ildefonso, Alilem and Nagbukel had the least number in terms of the number of registered deaths: Dumalneg with one registered death; Sigay, Carasi and Adams with two deaths each, Sugpon, San Ildefonso and Alilem with five deaths each and Nagbukel with six death occurrences. 

During the fourth quarter of 2018, mortality was at its peak in the month of October with total registered deaths of 3,069. This figure was more than one-third of the regional quarterly total of 8,470 death occurrences. The number of deaths in the month of October 2018 translates to an average of 99 death occurrences per day. The figure was higher than the daily average death occurrences in the region which is 92. December 2018 posted the lowest number of registered deaths with 2,647 in the fourth quarter of 2018.

 

 

In the same period of 2017, the highest number of registered deaths was in the month of November with 3,031 death occurrences, followed by the month of October with 2,958.  The smallest number of registered deaths was in December with 2,849. November 2017 has the highest daily average of 101 death occurrences followed by October with a daily average of 95 death occurrences.

There were more death occurrences among males (4,760) than females (3,710) in Region I during the fourth quarter of 2018.  The computed sex ratio during the quarter was 128 male deaths for every 100 female deaths. 

            Ilocos Norte posted the highest sex ratio with 133, La Union ranked second with 131 and followed by Pangasinan with 128.  The lowest computed sex ratio of 123 male deaths per 100 female deaths was noted in Ilocos Sur.

Data on births, deaths and marriages presented in this release were obtained from the Certificate of Live Birth (Municipal Form 102), Certificate of Death (Municipal Form 103) and Certificate of Marriage (Municipal Form No. 97) that were registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority - Provincial Statistical Offices in Region I. Information included births, deaths and marriages registered in October to December 2018 and October to December 2017.
