Birth Statistics

The number of registered live births in Ilocos Region during the fourth quarter of 2019 summed up to 24,372, a decrease of 3.5% compared to 25,259 births in the same period of 2018. The daily average birth occurrence during the fourth quarter of 2019 was computed at 265 births or an average of 11 babies born per hour. The month of October was observed to have the highest average daily births at 289 in fourth quarter of 2019. In same period a year ago, the month of October also recorded the highest average daily births at 293.

The highest number of registered live births during the fourth quarter of 2019 was recorded in the month of October. The percent share of the total births in October to the quarterly totals was 35.9 percent and 36.8 percent during the fourth quarter of 2018 and 2019, respectively.

The month of December was observed to have the least number of registered live births at 7,595 and 7,468 during the fourth quarter of 2018 and 2019, respectively.

Among the provinces in the region, the province of Pangasinan registered the highest number of births in the fourth quarter of 2019.  Its share was more than half (62.6 percent share) of the total registered births in Ilocos Region. The province of La Union ranked second with 3,624 births (14.9 percent share), followed by the province of Ilocos Sur with 2,971 births (12.2 percent share) and the province of Ilocos Norte with 2,531 (10.4 percent share).

In fourth quarter of 2019, San Carlos City, Pangasinan ranked first among the top ten Cities/Municipalities in Ilocos Region that registered the highest number of live births with 3,175. This was followed by Dagupan City, Pangasinan with 2,952 births; City of San Fernando, La Union with 1,966 births; City of Urdaneta, Pangasinan with 1,728 births; and City of Alaminos, Pangasinan with 1,185 births. It was also observed that San Carlos City has higher registered births than the total registered births in the province of Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte in the fourth quarter of 2019. 

On the other hand, the municipality of Dumalneg, Ilocos Norte had the lowest number of registered live birth in fourth quarter of 2019 with only one registered birth. It was followed by Santo Tomas, Pangasinan, Adams, Ilocos Norte, Banayoyo and Sigay, Ilocos Sur with two registered live births each and Laoac, Pangasinan, Burgos and Pinili, Ilocos Norte with three registered births each.

Males (12,520) outnumbered females (11,852) in terms of registered live births during the fourth quarter of 2019, resulting to a sex ratio of 106 males per 100 females.

Pangasinan posted a sex ratio of 107 which is higher than the regional ratio. The sex ratio of 106 was recorded in Ilocos Sur. On the other hand, two provinces posted a sex ratio that is lower than the regional ratio. The lowest sex ratio of 97 was recorded in Ilocos Norte, followed by La Union with 105.

In fourth quarter of 2019, there were 88.7 percent or 21,610 of total registered live births were attended by medical practitioners which may either be a physician, a nurse or a midwife. The province of Pangasinan had the highest percentage of birth deliveries tended by health professionals with 89.8 percent of the total registered live births in the province followed closely by La Union with 89.6 percent, Ilocos Norte with 86.7 percent and Ilocos Sur with 83.1 percent.

Marriage Statistics

There were 4,928 marriages registered during the fourth quarter of 2019, showing a decrease of 2.24 percent from the figure in the same period of last year of 5,041 marriages. 

Three provinces recorded a decrease in the number of registered marriages from fourth quarter of 2018 to fourth quarter of 2019.  A bigger decrease was noted in La Union from 811 to 787 marriages (-3.0 percent), followed by Pangasinan from 2,994 to 2,909 marriages (-2.8 percent), while that of Ilocos Sur decreased from 633 to 622 marriages (-1.7 percent). 

On the other hand, the only province that posted an increase in the number of registered marriages was Ilocos Norte from 603 to 610 marriages (1.2 percent).

Although the number of registered marriages in the province of Pangasinan went down to 2,909 during the fourth quarter of 2019 from 2,994 in the same quarter of 2018, it remained with the most number of registered marriages in the region. La Union ranked second with 787 (16.0 percent share) followed by Ilocos Sur with 622 (12.6 percent share). In same period a year ago, La Union also ranked second with 811 marriages (16.1 percent share) while Ilocos Sur ranked third with 633 marriages (12.6 percent share).

On the other end, the province of Ilocos Norte posted the least number of registered marriages during the fourth quarter of 2018 and 2019 with 603 (12.0 percent share) and 610 (12.4 percent share), respectively.

The month of December was the most preferred month to tie the knot during the fourth quarter of 2018 and 2019 with a total of 2,825 and 2,693 marriages, respectively. It corresponds to a daily average of 91 and 87 registered marriages, respectively which surpassed the regional daily average number during the fourth quarter of 2018 and 2019. On the other hand, November recorded the least number of marriage occurrences during the fourth quarter of 2019 with a total of 1,023 marriages translating to a daily average of 34 registered marriages. While in the same period a year ago, October posted the least number of marriage occurrences with 1,032 marriages or a daily average of 33 registered marriages.

Death Statistics

A total of 9,476 deaths were registered during the fourth quarter of 2019.  The figure indicated an increase of 11.9 percent death occurrences from the 2018 figure of 8,470.

The province of Pangasinan ranked first in terms of the number of registered deaths during the fourth quarter 2019, with a total of 5,267 or 55.6 percent share of the total registered deaths in the region.  La Union placed second with 1,669 registered deaths (17.6 percent share), followed by Ilocos Sur with 1,299 (13.7 percent share) and Ilocos Norte with 1,241 (13.1 percent share).

In the same quarter of 2018, Pangasinan recorded 4,986 deaths or 58.9 percent of the total registered deaths in the region. La Union registered 1,266 (14.9 percent share), Ilocos Sur with 1,118 (13.2 percent share) and Ilocos Norte with 1,100 (13.0 percent share).

Comparing the two periods, La Union reported the highest percent increase at 31.8 percent, followed by Ilocos Sur with 16.2 percent, Ilocos Norte with 12.8 percent and Pangasinan with 5.6 percent increase.

The cities of Dagupan, San Fernando, San Carlos, Batac and Urdaneta posted the highest number of registered deaths in fourth quarter of 2019 with 1,102, 769, 568, 430 and 276 deaths, respectively. On the other hand, the municipalities of Sugpon, Sigay, Nagbukel, Adams, Burgos, Gregorio Del Pilar, Dumalneg and San Ildefonso had the least number in terms of the number of registered deaths: Sugpon with one registered death; Sigay, Nagbukel and Adams with two deaths each, Burgos, Gregorio Del Pilar and Dumalneg with four deaths each and San Ildefonso with eight death occurrences.

During the fourth quarter of 2019, mortality was at its peak in the month of October with total registered deaths of 3,540. This figure was more than one-third of the regional quarterly total of 9,476 death occurrences. The number of deaths in the month of October 2019 translates to an average of 114 death occurrences per day. The figure was higher than the daily average death occurrences in the region which is 103. December 2019 posted the lowest number of registered deaths with 2,868 in fourth quarter of 2019.

In the same period of 2018, the highest number of registered deaths was also in the month of October with 3,069 death occurrences, followed by the month of November with 2,754.  The smallest number of registered deaths was in December with 2,647. October 2018 has the highest daily average of 99 death occurrences followed by November with a daily average of 92 death occurrences.

There were more death occurrences among males (5,277) than females (4,199) in Ilocos Region during the fourth quarter of 2019.  The computed sex ratio during the quarter was 126 male deaths for every 100 female deaths. 

La Union posted the highest sex ratio with 131, Ilocos Sur ranked second with 129 and followed by Pangasinan with 124.  The lowest computed sex ratio of 122 male deaths per 100 female deaths was noted in Ilocos Norte.
