PRODUCTION

Hog production in Region I in the second half of 2020 was recorded at 42,499 metric tons liveweight. This was lower by 5.25 percent compared with its level in second semester 2019. About 16.48 percent drop in production was noted in the 4th quarter 2020.  

Region I contributed  4.15 percent  to  the  national  production of 1,023,957 metric tons liveweight, ranking 10th  among the  top ten  hog  producing regions.

 

INVENTORY

The total inventory of swine in Ilocos Region as of July 1, 2020 was 586,344 heads. It decreased by 6.84 percent from previous year’s inventory of 629,374 heads. Around 79.60 percent or 466,746 heads of swine were raised in backyard farms while the remaining 20.40 percent or 119,598 heads were raised in commercial farms.

The total inventory of swine in the region further declined to 465,342 heads as of October 1, 2020. This was lower by 24.78 percent than last year’s level of 618,680 heads.  Decreases in inventory were noted in all provinces.  More backyard raisers and commercial farms disposed their stocks  and closed operation during the 3rd  quarter due  to African Swine Fever (ASF). 

PRICES

The average monthly farm prices of hog for slaughter in backyard farms from July to December 2020 were higher than the 2019 level of same period. An upward trend in price of hog was notable from Php 121.87 per kilo liveweight in September 2020 to Php 167.97 per kilo liveweight in November 2020. The average farmgate price of hogs in 2nd semester 2020 was Php 142.61 per kilo liveweight, higher by 24.95 percent compared to the price in 2nd semester 2029 of Php114.13 per kilo liveweight. The increase in price was attributed to low supply of hogs in the market as well as high demand from viajeros bound to Manila.

Likewise,  average retail price of pork lean meat of Php 254.84 per kilo  in

2nd semester 2020 was 17.03 percent higher than last year’s price of same period of Php 217.76 per kilo. The price was at its peak on December 2020 at PhP 285.42 per kilo.
