Palay production in Region I for the 2nd quarter 2016 went down, while corn production increased as compared in their respective levels in 2nd quarter 2015.

Palay

The overall palay production of Region I in April-June 2016 went down by 0.6 percent from the 140,993 MT output in the same period last year. It was contributed by the provinces of Ilocos Sur and Pangasinan that posted negative growths in output of 33.5 percent, and 7.5 percent, respectively. On the other hand, palay production of Ilocos Norte and La Union increased by 61.2 percent, and 0.5 percent, respectively. Overall yield per hectare declined by 0.1 percent.

The province of Pangasinan, which shared 75.1 percent to the total palay production in Region I, posted decline in output of about 7.5 percent in 2nd quarter 2016. From its  production  of  113,872 metric  tons  in  2nd quarter 2015, it  went  down to105,307 metric tons in  2nd quarter  2016.  Harvest area of the province shrunk by 5.6 percent from 25,939 hectares to 24,490 hectares due to insufficient water. Its yield per hectare also declined from 4.39 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2015 to 4.30 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2016.

The province of Ilocos Norte, which ranked second in terms of volume of production in the 2nd quarter 2016, registered increase in output by 61.2 percent. From the 14,171 metric tons production in 2nd Quarter 2015, it went up to 22,845 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2016. There were movement of cropping from the first quarter of 2016, thus, the area expanded by 54.8 percent. The yield per hectare improved from 4.62 metric tons to 4.81 metric tons may be due to increased utilization of hybrid and inbred seeds from DA-RFO I and HYTA Program, increased fertilizer usage, and presence of favourable rains during the vegetative and reproductive stages of palay crop.

As there were more harvest in the first quarter 2016 due to movement of cropping, palay production in the province of Ilocos Sur for the 2nd quarter 2016 went down by 33.5 percent as compared to its level in the same period last year. Its output was posted at 2,909 metric tons this 2nd quarter 2016. However, the overall yield per hectare of the province has improved from 4.35 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2015 to 4.49 metric tons 2nd quarter 2016.

Palay production in La Union went up from 10,041 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2015 to 10,087 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2016. Even if the harvest area of the province decreased by 6.9 percent due to the effect of insufficient water, its overall yield per hectare improved from 4.21 metric tons to 4.54 metric tons. This may be attributed to increased usage of hybrid and inbred seeds.
In terms of area harvested, which are all irrigated, the province of Pangasinan has the largest. It has a share of 76.8 percent to the total harvested area of palay in Region I in 2nd quarter 2016. All the provinces, except La Union, posted increases in production. The overall harvest area expanded by 5.5 percent from 29,665 hectares to 31,296 hectares contributed by yellow corn. Yield, in metric ton per hectare, also improved from 5.45 to 5.54.

The province of Pangasinan shared the bulk of corn harvest in 2nd quarter 2016 with a share of 64.9 percent to the total corn production in Region I. The overall harvest area of the province expanded to 20,125 hectares from 18,620 hectares in 2nd quarter 2015 contributed by both white and yellow corn. The overall yield increased by 0.3 percent due to sustained use of high yielding varieties.

The province of Ilocos Sur, which ranked second in terms of volume of production, also registered positive growth of 10.5 percent. From its output of 29,912 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2015, it went up to 33,054 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2016. More plantings were noted due to availability of seeds, and presence of scattered rains during the period. The overall yield of the province improved from 5.24 metric tons per hectare to 5.51 metric tons per hectare.
The corn production of Ilocos Norte also grew from 16,803   metric tons in 2nd quarter 2015 to 16,883 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2016. Although its harvest area declined by 2.7 percent, its overall yield grew from 5.49 metric tons per hectare to 5.67 metric tons per hectare. This may be attributed to sustained use of high yielding varieties, increased fertilizer usage, and presence of rains during the vegetative and reproductive stages.

The province of La Union registered negative growth in output in the 2nd quarter 2016.
