Region I will celebrate the 27th " National Statistics Month (NSM) this October 2016 with the theme: "Sustainable Development: Making Statistics Count." The theme highlights the critical role of statistics in monitoring the country's progress towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year's NSM celebration also coincides with the conduct of the 13th "National Convention on Statistics (NCS) on October 3-4, 2016 at EDSA Shangri-la Hotel, Mandaluyong City.
 
The annual celebration of the NSM aims: (a) to promote, enhance, and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of society; and (b) to elicit the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country.
 
The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Board issued PSA Memorandum Circular (MC) No. 01-16 on January 29, 2016 enjoining all agencies of the government, local government units, academic institutions, state universities and colleges, and the private sector at the national and subnational levels to actively participate in and support the celebration of the 27th NSM and 13th "NCS. PSA MC No. 01-16 designated the Regional Statistics Committees (RSCs) as the coordination bodies of all NSM activities at the local level. In Region I, the RSC issued Resolution No. 4, series of 2016, approving the common NSM regional activities and enjoining all Regional Line Agencies, Local Government Units, academic institutions and the private sector to participate and support the NSM celebration in the region.
 
Among the NSM regional activities are: Regional Statistics Exhibit (Oct. 12-28, CSI Mall, San Fernando City, La Union), Regional Opening Ceremony (Oct. 7, BSP-LURO), Regional Oratorical Contest (Oct. 7, BSP-LURO), Regional Poster-Slogan Making Contest (Oct. 20, Bayambang National High School), Regional Essay Writing Contest (Oct. 20, BNHS), Regional Statistics Quiz (Oct. 20, BNHS), Regional Jingle Making Contest (Oct. 27, BSP-LURO), and Regional Closing Ceremony (Oct. 27, BSP-LURO) which includes awarding of NSM winners and the Best 27th NSM Province Implementer. Meanwhile, on October 13, 2016, PSA-RSSO I will conduct a Data Appreciation Forum on the 2015 POPCEN results at Hotel Ariana, Bauang, La Union.
 
The RSC I serves as the overall coordinator of the region's NSM celebration thru the Technical Working Group (TWG) whose members are from the following agencies: Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, Department of the Interior and Local Government, Department of Education, Department of Health, Philippine Statistical Association, Inc., National Economic and Development Authority, Commission on Higher Education, Philippine Statistics Authority, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Labor and Employment, Department of Tourism, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Agriculture and Philippine Information Agency.
