The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) – La Union Provincial Statistical Office will conduct the 1st Quarter 2022 Livestock and Poultry Surveys comprised of the Commercial Livestock and Poultry Survey (CLPS) and the Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS) on March 22 to 31, 2022 and the BLPS on April 1 to 8, 2022 to measure the performance of the livestock and poultry industry.

The CLPS aims to generate estimates on inventory, supply and disposition, and other related data of livestock and poultry commodities from commercial farms. It is conducted quarterly for all types of animals such as swine, layer, broiler, carabao, cattle, goat, sheep and duck.

On the other hand, the BLPS is designed to generate estimates on inventory, supply and disposition, and other related data of livestock and poultry commodities at the household level. The data that will be gathered in this survey are: type of operation; inventory, born live/hatched live, acquired; sold live for slaughter and for other purposes; slaughtered/dressed in the household; number of deaths; average liveweight; average farmgate price; egg production indicator for poultry; and milk production for carabao, cattle and goat.

The data that will be generated for both surveys will be disseminated through Situation Reports (annual and quarterly) and infographics.  The production data that will be generated from the surveys will serve as direct inputs to the Value of Production of Agriculture and to the computation of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

In La Union, the PSA hired five Statistical Researchers (SRs) who will visit the sample farms for both surveys. The BLPS has a total of 320 sample households from 16 sample barangays while the CLPS has a total of 32 sample farms.  The PSA assures the public that all personnel involved in this undertaking are in good health condition and will strictly follow minimum public health and safety standards against COVID-19 during all phases of the field operations.  They shall likewise observe all protocols laid down by the Local Government Units (LGUs).

The authority and mandate of the PSA to conduct the CLPS and BLPS emanates from Republic Act (RA) No. 10625 known as the Philippine Statistical Act of 2013 which states that, “the PSA will be primarily responsible for all national censuses and surveys, sectoral statistics, consolidation of administrative recording system, and compilation of national accounts.”

The PSA enjoins the backyard raisers and commercial farm operators to support and participate in the survey by providing truthful, complete and accurate information to the SRs.  All data obtained will be held strictly confidential as stipulated in Section 26 of RA 10625 and Section 8 of RA 10173 or the Data Privacy Act.
