Palay production in La Union increases in 2^nd quarter 2022

The volume of palay production in La Union in 2^nd quarter 2022 was recorded at 10,105.93 metric tons. This is 5.25 percent higher than the volume of palay production in the province in the same period of 2021 at 9,602.00 metric tons.

Likewise, the area harvested for palay in the province increased by 5.25 percent from 2,115.00 hectares in 2^nd quarter 2021 to 2,226.00 hectares in 2^nd quarter 2022. The yield per hectare remains the same at 4.54 metric tons per hectare in 2^nd quarter 2021 and 2^nd quarter 2022.

Overall, the volume of palay production in Ilocos Region decreased by 2.26 percent from 186,987.60 metric tons in 2^nd quarter 2021 to 182,757.27 metric tons in 2^nd quarter 2022. Among the four provinces of Ilocos Region, Ilocos Sur recorded the least volume of palay production in 2^nd quarter 2022 with 5.14 percent (9,392.83 metric tons) of the total palay production in the region. Pangasinan accounted for the bulk of palay production in the region with 70.36 percent share (128,583.00 metric tons) followed by Ilocos Norte with 18.97 percent share (34,675.50 metric tons) and La Union with 5.53 percent share (10,105.93 metric tons).

In terms of total area harvested for palay in Ilocos Region, the area decreased by 4.62 percent from 38,644.00 hectares in 2^nd quarter 2021 to 36,860.35 hectares in 2^nd quarter 2022. Ilocos Sur had the smallest proportion of the total harvested area for palay in 2^nd quarter 2022 with 4.96 percent share (1,827.35 hectares). Pangasinan had the largest proportion of the total area harvested for palay in the region with 71.05 percent share (26,188.00 hectares), followed by Ilocos Norte with 17.96 percent share (6,619.00 hectares), and La Union with 6.04 percent share (2,226.00 hectares).

By ecosystem, the volume of palay produced from irrigated farms in La Union in 2^nd quarter 2022 was 10,105.93 metric tons.  This posted an increase of 5.25 percent from the 9,602.00 metric tons volume of palay production from irrigated farms in 2^nd quarter 2021.  Meanwhile, there is no palay produced from rainfed farms in the province in 2^nd quarter 2022.

Palay and Corn Production Survey (PCPS) is a quarterly survey that generates estimates and forecasts data on production, area and yield of palay and corn. The survey gathers information on the area planted/harvested and production by ecosystem (palay) and crop type (corn); monthly distribution of production and area harvested; farm household disposition/utilization of production; area of standing crop; planting intention indicator; use of seeds, fertilizers and pesticides; and awareness and availment of program interventions.

Production refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested for a particular crop during the reference period.

Area Harvested refers to the actual area from which harvest are realized during the reference period.

Irrigated Farms refer to area with irrigation facilities supplying water through artificial means like gravity, force/power, pump, etc.  Irrigated area become rainfed only, when the irrigation system is no longer operational for the past two years and beyond repair and there is no plan of irrigating the farm.        

Rainfed Farms refer to area that holds standing water but solely dependent on rainfall for its water supply. It may have dikes that retain rainwater. 

Yield refers to the measurement of the amount of agricultural production harvested per unit of land area.
