The province of La Union was awarded 1st Runner Up in the Search for 2020 Best National Statistics Month (NSM) Province Implementer in Ilocos Region during the 31st NSM Virtual Regional Closing Ceremony on October 30, 2020.

 

Contestants from La Union were also awarded during the NSM Closing Ceremony.  La Union emerged as Champion in the following contests/categories:  Essay Writing Contest (Employee); Poster-Slogan Making Contest (Tertiary); Oratorical Contest (Secondary); and Statistics Quiz (Employee).

 

The Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) through the Provincial Statistics Committee (PSC) conducted various activities aimed at: (1) promoting, enhancing, and instilling nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of the society; and (2) eliciting the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country despite the challenges brought by the new normal.

 

Timely with this year’s theme, “Bridging Digital Gaps: Making Information Available to All,” the PSC launched the digital statistical exhibit during the NSM opening ceremony to showcase data from various line agencies.  The PSC also conducted a webinar on statistical report writing and virtual statistical and civil registration symposium to capacitate personnel from concerned agencies in the preparation of statistical report and keep them updated on results of various surveys as well as civil registration concerns. 

 

All contests previously conducted on-site were conducted virtually among secondary and tertiary students and to employees from the government and private sector like virtual jingle singing contest, virtual essay writing contest, virtual poster-slogan making contest, virtual oratorical contest, and virtual statistics quiz.  In addition, the province also conducted the first Governor’s Cup on Infographics.

 

To intensify information advocacy campaign about the NSM, the PSC informed the conduct of the NSM through radio interviews via phone patch with Dr. Danites E. Teñido of Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) La Union during the radio program “Tugtugan at Balitaan” at i- FM on October 1 and during the radio program, “Baro a Timek ti Kapitolyo” at Bombo Radyo on October 24.  Dr. Teñido also talked about the month-long celebration during PSA-La Union’s monthly program, “Ti PSA Ken Sika,” at DZAG Radyo Pilipinas, Agoo, La Union on October 7.  Moreover, the public were also made aware of the celebration through hanging of NSM streamer by the PSC members and in all municipalities of the province as well as posting at their respective facebook page. 

 

For this year’s celebration, the PSA issued Memorandum Circular No. 2020-20 enjoining all agencies of the government, local government units, academic institutions, state universities and colleges, and the private sector at the national and subnational levels to actively participate in and support the celebration of the 31st NSM and 3rd World Statistics Day (WSD) in October 2020.

         

The annual observance of the NSM is pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647, “Declaring the Month of October of Every Year as the National Statistics Month,” issued on September 20, 1990 by then President Corazon C. Aquino.  Meanwhile, the first WSD was celebrated based on the Resolution adopted by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on 3 June 2010.  Following the success of the first WSD, the UN General Assembly decided to celebrate the second WSD on 20 October 2015 and the succeeding WSD every five (5) years on 20 October.  ###
