Palay and corn production in Ilocos Region grew in 2019 compared with their respective level in 2018.

PALAY

Palay production in 2019 was registered at 1,851,265 metric tons, higher than the 1,720,044 metric tons estimate in 2018. The harvest area expanded from 405,981 hectares to 407,139 hectares. The yield per hectare also improved from 4.24 metric tons to 4.55 metric tons. All the provinces registered positive growth in palay production.

The province of Pangasinan accounted for the biggest proportion of the total palay production of Ilocos Region in 2019 with 59.66 percent share. Its output was recorded at 1,104,392 metric tons, higher than the 1,077,039 metric tons output in 2018. The absence of destructive typhoons and strong winds, coupled with lesser damages of bacterial leaf blight and streak, and hopper burn contributed to the higher output. The yield per hectare grew from 4.26 metric tons to 4.37 metric tons. However, the harvest area decreased from 253,005 hectares to 252,619 hectares.

The province of Ilocos Norte ranked second in terms of volume of palay production in the region in 2019 with 17.81 percent share. Its output of 329,693 metric tons was higher than the output in 2018 of 281,562 metric tons. The increase in production was mainly contributed by the improved yield per hectare which was recorded at 5.00 metric tons, higher than the 4.26 metric tons attained in 2018. The area harvested, on the other hand, went down to 66,003 hectares from the 66,053 hectares reported a year ago.

The province of Ilocos Sur, which is third highest in terms of palay production in 2019 with 13.40 percent share, also registered higher production during the period. From the output of 201,992 metric tons in 2018, it went up to 248,126 metric tons in 2019.

Expansion of area from 49,004 hectares to 50,155 hectares was noted. The yield per hectare also improved from 4.12 metric tons to 4.95 metric tons attributed to increased usage of hybrid seeds and absence of destructive typhoons.

La Union recorded  the least volume of palay production with 9.13 percent of the total palay production in the region in 2019. Its output during the period increased to 169,054 metric tons from 159,451 metric tons recorded in 2018.  The harvest area expanded to 38,363 hectares from 37,919 hectares. The yield per hectare also improved from 4.21 metric tons to 4.41 metric tons due to increased usage of high quality seeds and absence of destructive typhoons.

CORN
Corn production in Ilocos Region went up by 2.49 percent in 2019. The output was recorded at 574,852 metric tons, higher than the 560,885 metric tons output a year ago. All the provinces of the region, except Pangasinan achieved increment in production. The harvest area increased from 95,087 hectares to 96,663 hectares. The yield per hectare also improved from 5.90 metric tons to 5.95 metric tons.

Pangasinan, which ranked first in terms of volume of production with 62.18 percent share, registered lower output in 2019. From 357,890 metric tons production in 2018, it went down to 357,470 metric tons in 2019. The harvest area decreased to 58,068 hectares from 58,817 hectares.  Higher moisture content during the planting schedule did not permit more plantings. Despite decrease in production and harvest area, the yield per hectare of corn production in the province during the period improved to 6.16 metric tons from 6.08 metric tons attained in 2018.

Ilocos Sur ranked second with 19.60 percent of the total corn production in the region in 2019. Its corn production grew from 99,476 metric tons in 2018 to 112,674 metric tons in 2019. Expansion of area from 17,419 hectares to 19,470 hectares was recorded. Similarly, the yield per hectare went up from 5.71 metric tons to 5.79 metric tons.

Ilocos Norte accounted for 11.33 percent of the total corn production in the region in 2019. Its production was registered at 65,123 metric tons, higher than the production of 64,592 metric tons in 2018. The harvest area increased from 11,692 hectares to 11,905 hectares. However, the yield per hectare went down from 5.52 metric tons to 5.47 metric tons.

The province of La Union had the least corn production in 2019 with 6.89 percent share to the total corn production in Ilocos Region. From 38,927 metric tons volume of production in 2018, the corn produced of the province grew to 39,585 metric tons in 2019. The harvest area expanded to 7,220 hectares from 7,159 hectares in 2018. Likewise, the yield per hectare improved from 5.44 metric tons to 5.48 metric tons.
