Fisheries production increased by 5.35 percent
The overall fisheries production in the region recorded at 46,846.41 metric tons in second quarter 2023, higher by 5.35 percent compared to its level in second quarter 2022. It contributed 4.33 percent to the 1,082,215.17 metric tons of fisheries production in the country.
Pangasinan contributes 81.89 percent to the region’s production
Pangasinan contributed 81.89 percent of the region’s fisheries production in second quarter 2023. The overall volume of production of the province was estimated at 38,361.18 metric tons. La Union had a share of 11.15 percent or an output of 5,224.65 metric tons. Meanwhile, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte shared 4.67 percent and 2.29 percent, respectively, to the total fisheries production in the region.
Pangasinan increased by 10.73 percent in fisheries production
By province, only Pangasinan recorded an increment of 10.73 percent in second quarter 2023 from the 34,644.80 metric tons of production in second quarter 2022. On the other hand, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and La Union decreased compared to their respective levels in the same quarter of 2022 by 18.32 percent, 15.88 percent, and 11.54 percent, respectively.
Aquaculture in the region recorded an increment in terms of production
By subsector, the total output of aquaculture registered a growth rate in second quarter 2023 of 8.84 percent from 36,357.15 metric tons in second quarter 2022. It has a contribution of 84.47 percent to the total volume of the region’s fisheries production.
Municipal fisheries production registered an output of 5,945.32 metric tons in second quarter 2023. This is lower by 10.46 percent from the 6,639.73 metric tons in second quarter 2022 and has 12.69 percent share to the total fisheries production in the region.
Commercial fisheries recorded 1,331.39 metric tons, a decrease of 9.35 percent from the output in second quarter 2022. Commercial fishing contributed 2.84 percent share of the total fisheries production in the region.
Milkfish has the highest production in the region of 25,820.15 metric tons
The top five species contributing to the total fisheries production of the Ilocos Region were milkfish, tilapia, roundscad, squid, and p. vannamei.
Milkfish had the biggest production at 25,820.15 metric tons or 55.12 percent of the total volume of fisheries production in second quarter 2023. It increased by 8.10 percent from the 23,729.92 metric tons output in second quarter 2022. Meanwhile, production of tilapia in the region was recorded at 11,378.67 metric tons, an increase of 10.09 percent compared to its level in the same quarter of 2022.
Production of roundscad was estimated at 1,419.50 metric tons, decreased by 32.56 percent in second quarter 2023. Squid output also declined by 17.12 percent with a production of 1,064.54 metric tons. Meanwhile, production of p. vannamei recorded 837.94 metric tons went down by 18.78 percent.
