The overall fisheries production in llocos Region went up by 4.12 percent in 1st quarter 2020 as compared to same quarter of 2019 that is from 34,299 metric tons in 1st quarter 2019 to 35,714 metric tons this year. All the three provinces recorded higher output while llocos Norte registered lower production.

The aquaculture and municipal subsectors contributed to the higher growth in the total fisheries volume of production of llocos Region in 1st quarter 2020. The aquaculture subsector contributed 76.19 percent to the total fisheries output. The municipalfisheries accounted for 22.25 percent while the commercial subsector shared 1.56 percent.

In terms of provincial distribution, the province of Pangasinan shared the bulk of production in the region with 82.44 percent. The overall volume of production of the province was posted at 29,444 metric tons, 0.54 percent higher than its production in the same period of 2019. The aquaculture subsector output increased, while the commercial and municipal subsectors posted decreases in output.

La Union distantly followed Pangasinan with an 8.16 percent share to the total volume of production in the region. Its fisheries production went up by 79.22 percent in 1s quarter 2020 with an output of 2,913 metric tons from the output of 1,625 metric tons in 1st quarter 2019. The municipal and aquaculture subsectors contributed to the overall positive performance of the province in terms of fisheries production.
 
Meanwhile, Ilocos Sur shared 5.02 percent to the total volume of production in the region. The fisheries production of the province was recorded at 1,792 metric tons in 1st quarter 2020, higher by 9.71 percent than the production a year ago of 1,633 metric tons. Increased catch in all subsectors contributed to the overall increment in output.
 
The province of Ilocos Norte, which had the least percent share of about 4.38 percent to the total fisheries production of Ilocos Region, recorded lower fisheries production in 1st quarter 2020 compared with its level a year ago. From 1,755 metric tons production, it went down to 1,565 metric tons attributed to the decline in the output of both municipal and aquaculture subsectors.
 

Commercial Fisheries

The commercial fisheries volume of production in Ilocos Region was posted at 555 metric tons in 1st quarter 2O20. The output was lower than the level in 1st quarter 2019 of 849 metric tons. La Union and Pangasinan posted decreases in output due to decreased number of boats and lesser school of fish.
 
In terms of provincial shares, Pangasinan accounted for 59.71 percent of the region's commercial fisheries volume of production in 1st quarter 2020. La Union followed with 29.49 percent share, and llocos Sur with 10.80 percent share.
 

The top five major catch in the region during the quarter were Skipjack, Bigeye tuna, Frigate tuna, Roundscad and Slipmouth.

Municipal Fisheries

The overall municipal fisheries production in Ilocos Region went up by 16.79 percent in 1st quarter 2020, The production was posted at 7,947 metric tons, higher than its output in 1st quarter 2019 of 6,804 metric tons. Both the marine and inland municipal fisheries recorded higher production.

Marine Municipal

Production of Marine Municipal Fisheries in Ilocos Region grew in 1st quarter 2020. Its output was posted at 7,534 metric tons, higher than the output in 1st quarter 2019 of 6,548 metric tons. La Union and Ilocos Sur contributed to the overall increment in output. The positive growth in output of the marine municipal fisheries in the region was brought by the increased fishing days, presence of more school of fish and bigger sizes of catch.
 
 

The province of Pangasinan contributed 45.40 percent to the region's marine municipal fish catch for the 1st quarter 2020, followed by La Union with 20.22 percent share, Ilocos Sur with 19.04 percent share, and Ilocos Norte with 15.34 percent.

The dominant catch in marine municipal fisheries of the region during the period were Squid, Yellowfin tuna, Cavalla, Skipjack and Siganid.

Inland Municipal Fisheries

Production of lnland Municipal Fisheries in Ilocos Region grew in 1st quarter 2020. From the output of 256 metric tons in the same period last year, it went up to 412 metric tons this year. All the provinces, except Ilocos Norte, registered positive growth in output. Increased fishing days, favorable water level, good water parameters, and more harvest from dispersal prqects and payaos contributed to the increment in production.
 
 
In terms of provincial distribution, La Union ranked first in the volume of production of inland municipal fisheries during the 1st quarter 2020 with 32.07 percent share. Ilocos Sur followed with 31.05 percent share, Pangasinan with 28.30 percent, and Ilocos Norte with 8.58 percent.
 
 
The top five major catch in the region during the period were Tilapia, Endeavor prawn, Freshwater goby, Oyster and Carp.
 
 

Aquaculture

Aquaculture production of Ilocos Region posted production of 27,212 metric tons in 1st quarter 2020. This is higher than the production in 1st quarter 2019 of 26,647 metric tons. Higher survival rate, availability of quality breeders and fingerlings and increased harvest area were the factors that contributed to the positive growth in output.
 
The province of Pangasinan shared the bulk of aquaculture production in 1st quarter 2020 with 93.98 percent. By culture type, aquaculture in Ilocos Region was dominated by Marine cage which accounted for 66.53 percent of the total production.
 
 
Milkfish dominated the aquaculture production of Ilocos Region in 1st quarter 2020 with a share of 90.02 percent. Its production during the period was registered at 24,495 metric tons, higher than its output in the same quarter last year of 24,004 metric tons. Higher survival rate, bigger sizes of catch, availability of quality fingerlings and breeders and increased harvest area were the factors that contributed to the positive growth in output. Bulk of milkfish production came from the province of Pangasinan.
