A total of 1,855 deaths were registered in La Union in 2nd quarter 2021. The figure indicated an increase of 43.46 percent from the 1,293 death occurrences in the same period of 2020. (Table 1)

 

The City of San Fernando ranked first in terms of the number of registered deaths in 2nd quarter 2021 with 676 or 36.44 percent of the total registered deaths in the province of La Union. The municipality of Agoo placed second with 190 registered deaths (10.24 percent share), followed by Bauang with 115 (6.20 percent share), Naguilian with 107 (5.77 percent share) and Luna with 83 (4.47 percent share). (Figure 1) 

In the same quarter of the previous year, the City of San Fernando also posted the highest record of registered deaths with 481 deaths or 37.20 percent of the provincial total. This was followed by Agoo with 146 registered deaths (11.29 percent share), Bauang with 83 (6.42 percent share), Naguilian with 65 (5.03 percent share), and Balaoan with 58 (4.49 percent share).

The municipality of Burgos recorded the smallest number of registered deaths in 2 nd quarter 2021 with 13 deaths (0.70 percent share). It was followed by municipality of Bagulin with 14 registered deaths (0.75 percent share) and Santol with 17 registered deaths (0.92 percent share).

Similarly, the least number of registered deaths in 2nd quarter 2020 was recorded in the municipality of Burgos with 4 deaths (0.31 percent share) followed by the municipality of San Gabriel with 13 registered deaths (1.01 percentage share and Santol with 14 registered deaths (1.08 percent share).

 

In 2nd quarter 2021, mortality was at its peak in the month of June with total registered deaths of 664. This figure is more than one-third of the provincial quarterly total of 1,855 death occurrences. The number of deaths in June 2021 translates to an average of 22 death occurrences per day. The figure was higher than the provincial daily average death occurrences of 20. (Table 2)

 

Similarly, the highest number of registered deaths in 2nd quarter 2020 was posted in the month of June with 528 death occurrences. This translates to an average of 18 deaths occurrences per day.

 

There were more death occurrences among males with a record of 1,012 (54.56 percent share) than females which have 843 (45.44 percent share) in the province of La Union for the 2nd quarter 2021. The computed sex ratio during the quarter was 120 which means that there were 120 male deaths per 100 female deaths. (Figure 3)

 

Half of the city/municipalities posted a sex ratio higher than the provincial sex ratio, the highest of which was recorded in the municipality of Sudipen with a sex ratio of 271 followed by Santol with 183, Bacnotan with 175, Bangar with 163 and Santo Tomas with 144. The lowest sex ratio of 44 was noted in Burgos. (Table 3)

Data on deaths presented in this release were obtained from the Certificate of Death (Municipal Form 103) registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars in La Union and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority - La Union Provincial Statistical Office. Information included deaths registered from April to June of 2020 and 2021.
