A total of 1,407 deaths were registered in La Union in 1st quarter 2021. The figure indicated a decrease of 12.72 percent from the 1,612 death occurrences in the same quarter of 2020.
The City of San Fernando ranked first in terms of the number of registered deaths in 1st quarter of 2021 with 523 or 37.17 percent of the total registered deaths in the province. The municipality of Agoo placed second with 155 registered deaths (11.02%), followed by Bauang with 76 (5.40%), Naguilian with 75 (5.33%), and Bacnotan and Rosario with 67 each (4.76%).
In the same quarter of the previous year 2020, the City of San Fernando still has the highest record of registered deaths with 723 deaths (44.85%) of the provincial total. This was followed by Agoo with 187 registered deaths (11.60%), Bauang with 75 (4.65%), Naguilian with 65 (4.03%) and Balaoan with 64 (3.97%).
The municipality of Bagulin recorded the smallest number of registered deaths in the first quarter of 2021 with nine deaths (0.64%). It was followed by municipality of Burgos with 11 deaths (0.78%) and San Gabriel with 14 deaths (1.00%).
In the same quarter last year, the municipality of Burgos had the least number of registered deaths with 12 deaths (0.74%) followed by the municipalities of Santol and San Gabriel with 14 deaths each (0.87%).
In 1st quarter of 2021, mortality was at its peak in the month of March with total registered deaths of 498. This figure is more than one-third of the provincial quarterly total of 1,407 death occurrences. The number of deaths in March 2021 translates to an average of 16 death occurrences per day. The figure was same with the provincial daily average death occurrences of 16.
Meanwhile, the highest number of registered deaths in 1st quarter of 2020 was posted in the month of January with 665 death occurrences. This translates to an average of 21 death occurrences per day
There were more death occurrences among males with a record of 796 than females which have 611 in the province of La Union for the 1st quarter 2021. The computed sex ratio during the quarter was 130. The computed figure of sex ratio means that there are 130 male per 100 female death
A total of six city/municipalities posted a sex ratio higher than the provincial sex ratio, the highest of which were recorded in the municipalities of Bacnotan with sex ratio of 205, Naguilian with 142, Rosario with 148, City of San Fernando with 150, San Gabriel with 180, and San Juan with 142. The lowest sex ratio of 57 was noted in Burgos.

Data on deaths presented in this release were obtained from the Certificate of Death (Municipal Form 103) registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars in La Union and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority - La Union Provincial Statistical Office. Information included deaths registered from January to March of 2020 and 2021.
