The corn production in the Ilocos Region in 2nd quarter 2022 decreased by 2.33 percent. From the output of 174,297 metric tons in the same period of 2021, it went down to 170,240 metric tons in 2nd quarter 2022. The harvest area declined from 28,970 hectares to 28,744 hectares. The yield per hectare also has an output loss from 6.02 metric tons to 5.92 metric tons.

The provinces of Ilocos Norte and La Union recorded positive growth for said commodity, while Ilocos Sur and Pangasinan experienced contraction.

About 92.89 percent of the total corn production of the Ilocos Regionin 2nd quarter 2022 were yellow corn and the rest were white corn. In terms of the area harvested, yellow corn comprised 89.34 percent while 10.66 percent were white corn.

The bulk of corn harvest in 2nd quarter 2022 came from Pangasinan with 60.13 percent share in the total corn production in Ilocos Region. During the period, the province recorded 102,368 metric tons volume of corn production. This is lower by 0.48 percent from the 102,866 metric tons output in the same period of 2021. The harvest area was at 16,747 hectares, of which, 94.03 percent were yellow corn. The yield per hectare also went down from 6.14 metric tons to 6.11 metric tons during the period.

Ilocos Sur ranked second among the four provinces of the region in terms of volume of corn production in 2nd quarter 2022. The province registered a production of 40,355 metric tons, lower by 11.69 percent from the output in 2nd quarter 2021 of 45,698 metric tons. The harvest area decreased from 7,603 hectares to 7,060 hectares. The yield per hectare also went down from 6.01 metric tons to 5.72 metric tons. Yellow corn dominated the corn areas of the province sharing 84.96 percent.

The volume of corn production in Ilocos Norte increased in 2nd quarter 2022. The output was posted at 15,878 metric tons, or 11.83 percent higher than the record in 2nd quarter 2021 of 14,199 metric tons. The harvest area also went up from 2,389 hectares to 2,684 hectares. Yellow corn comprised 89.34 percent of the total corn area harvested in the province, while the remaining were white corn. Meanwhile, the yield per hectare decreased from 5.94 metric tons to 5.92 metric tons. The province ranked third in terms of volume of corn production in 2nd quarter 2022 with 9.33 percent share.

The province of La Union produced 11,639 metric tons of corn during the 2nd quarter 2022. This is 0.91 percent higher than the output in the previous year of the same period. Yellow corn contributed 68.17 percent of the total corn area in the province. The harvest area increased to 2,253 hectares from the 2,231 hectares in 2nd quarter 2021. However, the yield per hectare slightly decreased by 0.08 percent in 2nd quarter 2022.
