La Union’s commercial fisheries production improves in 4th Quarter 2021

 

The volume of production from commercial fisheries was posted at 516.09 metric tons in 4th quarter 2021.  This recorded an increase of 54.66 percent from its level in the same period a year ago of 333.69 metric tons.

 

 

The top five major catch in La Union in 4th quarter 2021 were Hairtail (Espada) with 39.03 metric tons, Indian-mackerel (Alumahan) with 37.18 metric tons, Goatfish (Saramulyete) with 37.01 metric tons, Indo-pacific mackerel (Hasa-hasa) with 36.33 metric tons, and Squid (Pusit) with 35.46 metric tons.

 

Hairtail output contributed 7.56 percent to the total commercial fisheries production in 4th quarter of 2021.  Meanwhile, the shares of Indian mackerel, Goatfish, Indo-pacific mackerel, and Squid production to the total commercial fisheries output in the said quarter were 7.20 percent, 7.17 percent, 7.04 percent, and 6.87 percent, respectively.

 

 

The total value of commercial fisheries production in La Union in 4th quarter 2021 was PhP65,760.79 which was 56.52 percent higher than its value in the same quarter of the previous year of PhP42,015.33.

 

The top three species with the highest contribution to the total value of commercial fisheries production in 4th quarter 2021 include Squid with PhP7,047.32 (10.72 percent share), Slipmouth with PhP6,994.56 (10.64 percent share), and Threadfin bream with PhP6,131.89 (9.32 percent share).  Squid, Slipmouth and Threadfin bream’s value of production grew by 37.05 percent, 12.60 percent and 66.88 percent, respectively.

 

 

Data for commercial fisheries were obtained from Local Government Unit (LGU) -managed fish landing centers, privately-managed fish landing centers, and traditional fish landing centers.

 

 

 


TECHNICAL NOTES

 

Landing Center is a place where the fish catch and other aquatic products are unloaded and traded. Traditional landing center is a type of landing center where fishermen could unload their catch and/or dock their fishing boats without any obligation or payment for the use of the place.

 

 

Quarterly Commercial Fisheries Survey (Traditional Landing Center) is a quarterly survey on the volume of fish unloading in traditional landing centers and the price of fish by species.  It gathers data on a quarterly basis but the information that is collected is about monthly fish unloading.

 

Quarterly Commercial Fisheries Survey (Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA), Local Government Units (LGUs), Privately-Managed Landing Centers) is the gathering of data from the records of the PFDA, LGU and privately-managed landing centers. It is done on a quarterly basis but the information being collected is on each of the three months included in the reference quarter.
