The number of registered live births in La Union in third quarter 2020 summed up to 2,967, a decrease of 16.42 percent compared with the 3,550 births in the same period of 2019.The daily average birth occurrence in third quarter 2020 was computed at 32 births or an average of two babies born per hour.

 

 

In the third quarter of 2020, the month of September recorded the highest daily average births at 38babies, while the month of August posted the lowest daily average births at 26 babies. Similarly, the highest daily average births in third quarter a year ago was also recorded in the month of September with 42 babies while the lowest daily average births of 34 was recorded in the month of August.

Among the city/municipalities in the province, the City of San Fernando registered the highest number of births at 1,488 in third quarter 2020.  Its share was more than half or 50.15 percent of the total registered births in La Union. Agoo ranked second with 665 births (22.41 percent share), distantly followed by Bacnotan with 264 births (8.90 percent share), Naguilian with 176 births (1.15 percent share) and Rosario with 77 births(2.60 percent share).

 

On the other hand, Luna had the lowest number of registered live births with one birth (0.03 percent share) in third quarter 2020 while Sudipen had the lowest number of registered live births with four births (0.11 percent share) in the same quarter of 2019.

 

 

Males (1,507) outnumbered females (1,460) in terms of registered live births during the third quarter of 2020 resulting to a sex ratio of 103 males per 100 females.

Nine municipalities posted a sex ratio higher than the provincial ratio. The highest sex ratio of 267 was recorded in Bangar. This was followed by Pugo with a sex ratio of 200, Balaoan with 140, Santo Tomas with 125 and Sudipen with 120. On the contrary, the lowest sex ratio of zero was recorded in the municipalities of Burgos and Luna.

 

 

There were 2,860 registered live births in third quarter 2020 attended by medical practitioners which may either be a physician, a nurse or a midwife. On the other hand, there were 107 births or 3.61 percent of the total registered births in the province in third quarter 2020 attended by traditional and other birth attendants.

            Data on births presented in this release were obtained from the Certificate of Birth (Municipal Form No. 102) that were registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars in La Union and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority La Union Provincial Statistical Office. Information presented include births registered from July to September of 2019 and 2020.
