In 2024, the total palay production in the Ilocos Region declined by 1.2 percent, from 1,990,287 metric tons in 2023 to 1,967,134 metric tons in 2024. Ilocos Region ranked third in terms of volume of production among the regions in the country in 2024, accounting for a 10.3 percent share.

 

In terms of yield per hectare, Ilocos Region ranked second among the regions in the country. The yield per hectare recorded at 4.81 metric tons, lower than the 4.84 metric tons in 2023. Similarly, the harvest area of the region scaled down from 410,925 hectares to 408,569 hectares. (Table 1)

 

Majority of the palay production in Ilocos Region were from irrigated farms. In 2024, the irrigated palay shared about 71.3 percent or 1,403,373 metric tons to the total palay production of the region, lower by 0.1 percent or 17,975 metric tons compared to the irrigated palay production in 2023.

Meanwhile, 28.7 percent or 563,761 metric tons of palay came from rainfed farms in 2024. This was lower than the 568,939 metric tons recorded in 2023.

 

All the provinces of the region, except Ilocos Norte, posted decreases in palay production. Pangasinan recorded the biggest share to the total palay production of Ilocos Region in 2024 of 61.7 percent. The output of the province registered at 1,213,670 metric tons, lower than the recorded 1,231,638 metric tons in 2023.

The yield per hectare during the period declined to 4.74 metric tons from 4.77 metric tons in 2023. Likewise, the harvest area was reduced by 0.7 percent from 258,100 hectares in 2023 to 256,212 hectares in 2024.

 

In 2024, Ilocos Norte ranked second in terms of volume palay production in the region with 17.4 percent share. The output reached 341,889 metric tons, or 0.9 percent higher than the output in 2023 of 338,681 metric tons. The harvest area declined by 0.3 percent from 65,069 hectares to 64,864 hectares. Meanwhile, the yield per hectare went up from 5.20 metric tons to 5.27 metric tons.

Ilocos Sur recorded 239,286 metric tons palay production in 2024. The output was lower than the production in 2023 with 246,076 metric tons. The harvest area decreased by 0.5 percent from 49,322 hectares in 2023 to 49,095 hectares in 2024. The yield per hectare also declined from 4.99 metric tons to 4.87 metric tons. In addition, the province shared 12.2 percent of the total palay production of Ilocos Region in 2024.

Lastly, the province of La Union shared 8.7 percent of the total palay production in the region in 2024. The palay output of the province decreased by 0.9 percent from 173,892 metric tons in 2023 to 172,290 metric tons in 2024. The harvest area also contracted to 38,399 hectares from 38,434 hectares. Consequently, the yield per hectare went down from 4.52 metric tons to 4.49 metric tons.
