Hog production decreased by 24.6 percent

In the first quarter of 2025, the hog production of the Ilocos Region declined by 24.6 percent. From 17,774 metric tons, liveweight in first quarter 2024, its production went down to 13,400 metric tons, liveweight.

 

 

The Ilocos Region accounted for 3.3 percent of the country’s total hog production of 403,789 metric tons, liveweight in first quarter 2025. With a contribution of 13,400 metric tons, liveweight, the region took the 12th spot nationwide in terms of production.

 

The hog production in Ilocos Region during the first quarter 2025 was led by Ilocos Norte with a share of 36.0 percent of the region’s total output. This is equivalent to 4,827 metric tons, liveweight. It was followed by Ilocos Sur with 3,266 metric tons, liveweight (24.4 percent) and Pangasinan with 3,131 metric tons, liveweight (23.4 percent). La Union contributed the least, with a share of 2,176 metric tons, liveweight, or equivalent to 16.2 percent of the region’s total production.

Ilocos Region posted 13.5 percent decline in hog population

As of 01 January 2025, Ilocos Region’s total hog population was recorded at 370,327 heads, lower by 13.5 percent compared to the 428,010 headcounts in the first quarter of 2024. The province of Ilocos Norte experienced the largest decline at 21.3 percent, followed by Pangasinan and La Union with 17.4 percent and 3.3 percent, respectively. On the contrary, Ilocos Sur was the only province that showed a growth in hog inventory at 4.4 percent.

 

Smallhold farms tended 262,096 heads as of 01 January 2025, or 70.8 percent of the total hog population of the region. Commercial farms accounted for 24.1 percent, or 89,071 heads. The remaining 5.2 percent came from semi-commercial with 19,160 heads.

 

Farmgate Price

Hogs for slaughter had an average farmgate price of PhP201.12 per kilogram, liveweight in first quarter 2025. It grew by 28.0 percent compared to the average farmgate price of PhP157.16 per kilogram, liveweight in the same period of 2024.

The highest farmgate price in first quarter 2025 was recorded in March at PhP 208.01 per kilogram, liveweight.
