Goat production in Ilocos Region increased by 1.4 percent

The total goat production in the Ilocos Region was estimated at 1,615 metric tons, liveweight in first quarter 2025. This indicates an increase of 1.4 percent from the 1,593 metric tons, liveweight recorded in first quarter 2024.

 

 

The Ilocos Region ranked first among the regions in terms of goat production in first quarter 2025, accounting for 11.1 percent of the nation’s total production. The country’s overall goat production was posted at 14,487 metric tons, liveweight.

 

All the provinces in the region, except Ilocos Norte, posted increases in goat production in first quarter 2025. Pangasinan was leading with 814 metric tons, liveweight or 50.4 percent of the total production. Its output during the period was 2.6 percent higher than the record in first quarter 2024. Ilocos Norte ranked second with 342 metric tons, liveweight, accounting for 21.2 percent. La Union and Ilocos Sur have recorded 232 metric tons, liveweight (14.4 percent), and 226 metric tons, liveweight (14.0 percent), respectively.

Goat population decreased by 18.4 percent

As of 01 April 2025, the Ilocos Region’s goat population reached 366,531, a decrease of 18.4 percent from 448,917 heads recorded in April 2024. In addition, the goat inventory as of 01 January 2025 declined by 9.8 percent compared to the same period in 2024.

 

Among the provinces in Ilocos Region, only La Union posted positive growth in goat population as of 01 January 2025, with 106,468 heads, an increase of 6.2 percent from the inventory as of 01 January 2024. Meanwhile, other provinces recorded negative growth: Pangasinan with 25.8 percent, Ilocos Sur with 6.2 percent, and Ilocos Norte with 3.1 percent.

All the provinces posted decline in goat population as of 01 April 2025. As of 01 April 2025, Ilocos Norte recorded 83,409 heads compared to 92,658 heads from the same period in 2024. Ilocos Sur recorded 80,053 heads, compared to 89,916 heads recorded as of 01 April 2024. In addition, La Union recorded 101,396 heads compared to 103,784 heads in 2024. Lastly, Pangasinan recorded an inventory of 101,673 heads compared to 162,559 heads recorded in the same period of 2024.

Farmgate Price

The average farmgate price of goat for slaughter in first quarter 2025 was PhP235.44 per kilogram, liveweight. It went down by 8.3 percent from the average farmgate price of PhP256.84 per kilogram, liveweight in first quarter 2024.

The highest farmgate price in first quarter of 2025 was recorded in January, at PhP239.75 per kilogram, liveweight.
