LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION

La Union Livestock Volume of Production dropped by 2. 18 percent in 2019

In La Union, Livestock volume of production for 2019 dropped by 2.18 percent from 22,200 metric tons in 2018 to 21,716 metric tons in 2019. As shown in Figure 1, all of the reported livestock production decreased which includes hog production that declined by 0.97% against 2018 with 17,397 metric tons to 17,229 metric tons in  2019, carabao by 8.93 % from 1,221 metric tons in 2018 to 1,112 metric tons in 2019, cattle by 5.94 % from 1,112 metric tons in 2018 to 2,296 metric tons in 2019 and, goat by 5.43% from 1,141 metric tons in 2018 and 1,079 metric tons in 2019.

In the Livestock production contribution in 2019 regional total, La union ranked 2nd in Hog production at 18.22 percent with 17,229 metric tons, 3rd placed for carabao at 12.95 percent with 1,112 metric tons and, ranked 4th for both cattle and goat at 8.13 percent with 2,296 metric tons and 9.63 percent with 1,079 metric tons respectively.

 

POULTRY PRODUCTION

Volume of Poultry and Egg Production increased by 10.46 percent in 2019

La Union’s total poultry and egg volume production for 2019 increased by 10.46 percent compared to 2018 from 17,125 metric tons to 18,917 metric tons in 2019. These was attributed to the positive report from chicken at 16.06 percent from 12,519 metric tons in 2018 to 14,529 metric tons in 2019 and Duck with 19.18 percent from 94 metric tons in 2018 to 112 metric tons in 2019. On the other hand, it can be observed that there is a slightly decreased for both chicken egg productions with 5.29 percent from 4,293 in 2018 metric tons to 4,066 metric tons in 2019 and duck egg with 4.11 percent from 219 metric tons in 2018 and 210 metric tons in 2019.

In the percent distribution of the volume of poultry and egg production for the regional total in 2019, La Union ranked 2nd for chicken production at 17.25 percent with 14,529 metric tons and Duck placed 3rd at 8.48 percent with 112 metric tons. As for chicken egg production, it garnered the 3rd placed at 20.77 percent with 4,066 metric tons and duck egg gained the 2nd placed at 20.04 percent with 210 metric tons.

In the percent distribution of livestock and poultry production in the province in 2019, chicken has the highest contribution at 83.82 percent followed by swine with 5.24 percent, goat with 3.90 percent, duck with 3.09 percent, cattle with 2.53 percent and, lastly carabao with percent share of 1.42 to the provincial total of production.

The total livestock and poultry inventory increased by 5.53 percent compared with January 1, 2019. Chicken, swine, goat, cattle, and carabao posted a positive growth with 6.31 percent, 5.62 percent, 0.66 percent, 2.85 percent and 4.97 percent respectively. While duck decreased by 7.41 percent.

 

TECHNICAL NOTES

Production data of livestock and poultry were generated based on the result of the Commercial Livestock and Poultry Survey (CLPS) and the Backyard Livestock and Poultry Survey (BLPS) data collection for Swine and Chicken were done quarterly while semi-annually for Carabao, Cattle, Goat and Duck farms. BLPS were conducted on a sampling scheme generated from the PCPS samples, while CLPS were on sampling scheme and complete enumeration.

Both surveys are important as the data generated will aid policy makers in generating sound policy decision on the improvement of backyard and commercial farms for the welfare of the farmers and operators. Moreover, the survey will determine/measure the performance of the livestock and poultry industry and the agriculture sector, as a whole.

Livestock – Refers to farm animals kept or raised for consumption, work or leisure. For the purpose of this report, livestock include hog, carabao, cattle and goat that are tended and raised by an operator.

 Poultry – Is a collective term for all domesticated avian for the purpose of food consumption or the carcass of such avian was dressed/processed for human consumption.

 Production – Refers to the volume of indigenous (locally raised) animals disposed for slaughter plus animal exported or shipped out for slaughter both in the live weight equivalent.

Category– Is the type or the environment where the livestock or poultry was raised.

Commercial Livestock Farm/Operator - refers to any livestock operator or farm which operation satisfies at least one of the following conditions:

  • at least 21 heads of adult and zero head of young
  • at least 41 heads of young animals
  • at least 10 heads of adult and 22 heads of young Commercial Farm for Poultry

Commercial Poultry Farm/Operator - refers to any poultry operator or farm which operation satisfies at least one of the following conditions:

  • 500 layers, or1,000 broilers
  • 100 layers and 100 broilers if raised in combination
  • 100 head of duck regardless of age

Backyard Farm/Raiser- refers to any farm or household raising at least one head of animal or bird and does not qualify as a commercial farm.

Animal Inventory (also, Animal Population) -is the number of domesticated animals in head present in the farm at specific reference date.
