A total of 8,260 deaths were registered in La Union in 2021.  The figure indicated an increase of 45.94 percent death occurrences from the 2020 figure of 5,650. (Table 1)

The City of San Fernando ranked first in terms of the number of registered deaths in 2021 with 2,855 or 34.56 percent of the total registered deaths in the province.  Agoo ranked second with 909 registered deaths (11.00 percent share), followed by Bauang with 476 (5.76 percent share), Nagulian with 444 (5.38 percent share) and Bacnotan with 398 (4.82 percent share). 

 

In 2020, the City of San Fernando also recorded the highest number of registered deaths with 2,173 deaths or 38.39 percent of the provincial total. This was followed by Agoo with 607 registered deaths (10.72 percent share), Bauang with 323 (5.71 percent share), Naguilian with 272 (4.81 percent share) and Rosario with 251 (4.43 percent share).

 

The municipalities of Burgos, Bagulin and Santol posted the smallest number of registered deaths in 2021 with 52 deaths (0.63 percent share), 77 deaths (0.93 percent share) and 83 deaths (1.00 percent share), respectively. Similarly, in 2019, the municipalities of Burgos, Santol and Bagulin had the least number of registered deaths with 27 deaths (0.48 percent share), 54 deaths (0.95 percent share) and 72 deaths (1.27 percent share), respectively. There were more death occurrences among males at 4,501 (54.49 percent share) than females at 2,465 (45.51 percent share) in La Union in 2021.  The computed sex ratio during the year was 120 which means that 120 males died for every 100 female deaths. 

 

A total of nine city/municipalities posted a sex ratio higher than the provincial sex ratio, the highest of which was recorded in Bacnotan with 162. San Gabriel ranked second with 139 followed by Rosario with 133. (Table 2)

 

The daily average death occurrences in 2021 was computed at 23 or an average of one death per hour.  In 2020, the daily average deaths were recorded at 15 death occurrences per day. (Table 3)

 

The month of October recorded the highest number of registered deaths in 2021 with 1,161 occurrences. The number of deaths in October 2021 translates to an average of 37 death occurrences per day. In 2020, the number of registered deaths peaked in January with 665 deaths or an average of 21 deaths per day.

 

Meanwhile, the months of February and January posted the lowest number of registered deaths in 2021 with 430 and 479 death occurrences respectively or an average of 15 death occurrences per day for both months. (Figure 3)

Data on deaths presented in this release were obtained from the Certificate of Death (Municipal Form 103) registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars in La Union and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority - La Union Provincial Statistical Office. Information included deaths registered from January to December of 2020 and 2021.
