Brochure on Women and Men in Region 1

It is stated in the 1987 Constitution of the Philippines that “the sate recognizes the role of women in nation-building and shall ensure the fundamental equality before the law of women and men.” With this, various laws and programs were implemented for Gender and Development. In 2009, the Magna Carta of Women (RA 9710) was enacted. The law provides substantive equality between males and females, and eliminating all forms of discrimination. It also mandates the generation and maintenance of gender statistics and sex-disaggregated databases to aid in planning, programming and policy formulation.
One of the functions of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) as spelled-out in Republic Act No. 10625, also known as the “Philippine Statistical Act of 2013”, is to collect, compile, analyze, and publish statistical information relating to the country’s economic, social, demographic and general activities and condition of the people. Among these are updated data on gender and development (GAD) to be used for its various publications.
The 2017 brochure on Women and Men in Region I at a glance is the maiden edition of this publication. It is a product of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) - Regional Statistical Services Office (RSSO) I. It features sex disaggregated data on a graphical format with textual analysis. It provides gender statistics needed by decision-makers, project planners, implementers and evaluators as a guide in their advocacy work and in their formulation of effective plans, programs and policies for the advancement of women in Region I. The preparation of this publication was made possible through the utmost cooperation and support provided by data source agencies in providing their latest available sex-disaggregated data. In this regard, we would like to express our profound appreciation and gratitude.
